Scottie Scheffler was reportedly heckled by fans when he returned to compete in the PGA Championship for the second round on Friday, May 17. Previously, the American golfer was involved in an unfortunate incident where he was detained by the police and had to take a mugshot. However, he was released from jail and returned to the Valhalla Golf Course for the second round.
As he made his way to the course, fans reportedly heckled him, comparing his mugshot to that of Tiger Woods' from 2017. According to SI, a fan was heard saying that Scheffler's mugshot was "better than Tiger's."
Despite the comments, the World No. 1 did not respond and headed straight to the course to play his game. For context, Tiger Woods was arrested for a DUI in 2017, and his mugshot showed him looking sad and shocked.
Interestingly, Tiger Woods is also playing in the ongoing major but is on the verge of missing the cut following the second round. Woods finished eight strokes behind the projected cutline of under par 1 after Friday's round.
Meanwhile, despite his recent police incident, Scheffler remained composed and carded a 66 in the second round to score under par 9, settling in a tie for fourth place. However, the play was suspended on Friday and will resume on Saturday, May 18.
Fans spotted wearing Scottie Scheffler's mugshot shirts
Fans printed Scottie Scheffler's mugshot on their shirts and attended the second round of the PGA Championship at the Valhalla Golf Course on Friday.
The pictures quickly went viral on the internet, and even Nuclr Golf shared them on their X account with the caption:
"Scottie Scheffler mug shot shirts are already floating around Valhalla PGAChamp @SchefflerFans."
Earlier that morning, Scheffler had been detained by the police on second-degree charges. Reportedly, while heading to the golf course, Scheffler's car suddenly accelerated forward, allegedly injuring a police officer who was trying to stop him.
The incident occurred following a tragic accident outside the golf course. Reportedly, a man was killed by a shuttle bus early that morning, and the police were trying to control the situation.
Meanwhile, Scottie Scheffler was heading to the golf course and allegedly became involved in an incident with the police. The two-time Masters winner opened up about the incident, calling it a "chaotic situation." He said (via ESPN):
"This morning, I was proceeding as directed by police officers. It was a very chaotic situation, understandably so considering the tragic accident that had occurred earlier, and there was a big misunderstanding of what I thought I was being asked to do. I never intended to disregard any of the instructions. I'm hopeful to put this to the side and focus on golf today."
Because of the accident and resulting traffic, the second round at Valhalla Golf Course started late and could not be completed on Friday. It will resume on Saturday, May 18, at 7:15 am ET. The players will then tee off for the third round, followed by the conclusion of the event on Sunday, May 19.
