John Daly was spotted using a golf cart during the first round of the PGA Championship. However, while he was on the cart, his caddie was walking alongside him, carrying the bag.
Daly, making his 30th appearance at the PGA Championship, carded an 11-over 82 in the first round. He sank nine bogeys and a double bogey to finish second from the last after the conclusion of the opening day at Valhalla Golf Club.
Despite the poor performance with the club in the first round, Daly grabbed attention when he was seen using a golf cart at Valhalla. According to the rulings, only he was allowed to ride in the golf cart, not his caddie or clubs. Dylan Dethier of Golf Magazine posted Daly's photograph on X and wrote:
"one of the strangest rules at the PGA Championship is that while John Daly can ride in a golf cart his golf clubs cannot"
Fans online seemed unhappy with this rule and called it bizarre. Here's a look at some of the responses:
"Bizarre," one fan wrote.
"Golf has the oddest rules of any sport," another user wrote.
"He's taking the spot of a world class golfer. This is embarrassing, one fan wrote"
"Imagine being the only player in the tournament with a cart & shooting a 80 lol," another user commented.
"Call me a Grinch but the PGA needs to end lifetime exemptions," one fan opined. "We don’t need to see John Daly puttering around on a golf cart so he can shoot 85 at a literal major championship"
"This is the same rules for the Champions tour," this user explained the rule. "Recently listened to @HackItOutGolf and @GregChalmersPGA explained that caddies can't ride because pace of play and allowing the spectators to walk along with the pace of play. Which kind of makes sense."
When will John Daly tee off at the PGA Championship on Friday?

John Daly is grouped with Lee Hodges and Robert MacIntyre for the second round of the PGA Championship. The trio will tee off on Friday, May 17, at 1:57 pm ET.
While Daly is placed second to the bottom, Lee Hodges shot an even-par 71 to tie for 65th after Day 1 at Valhalla. Robert MacIntyre carded a 5-under 66 and was just four strokes behind the leader, Xander Schauffele.
Daly won the PGA Championship in 1991 but has never finished in the top 10 since then. Having played the tournament 29 times, he has made just seven cuts. However, he also has an Open Championship title, which he won in 1995.
