Golf commentator Brandel Chamblee praised Justin Thomas for his letter to the PGA Tour. Thomas sent an interesting way to increase viewership. It is no secret that TV ratings for golf tournaments have been on a slippery slope in the past few years.
Thomas mentioned in his letter that he had conversations with PGA Tour's broadcasters, NBC and CBS, on what can be done to increase viewership. He further suggested ways to provide "more access and insight" to the fans during the events.
Brandel Chamblee recently reshared the letter on X appreciating the ace golfer for taking the lead. He captioned his post and stated:
"That’s leadership right there."
Justin Thomas' open letter to the PGA Tour has created waves in the golf community. The memo was obtained by the Atlantic.
What did Justin Thomas say about mid-round interviews?
Whether it be the PGA Tour or LIV Golf, efforts are being made to increase TV ratings which have been dismal at best for a while. While the Saudi-backed league turned golf tournaments into massive, entertaining spectacles, the PGA Tour partnered with Tiger Woods' and Rory McIlroy's tech-forward TGL.
The latter has also enabled golfers to be a part of mid-round interviews during tournaments. Although Justin Thomas was initially against the idea, he eventually warmed up to it. In his letter to the PGA Tour, he mentioned how these interviews provide fans with an extra scoop on players.
"The more I think about it, the more I feel us giving more access and insight can make a WORLD of difference. Things such as pre-round interviews, mid-round interviews, wearing a mic, communication of any equipment/swing changes you're working on with broadcasters, etc," he said via The Mirror US
The 31-year-old gave mid-round interviews in two of his last starts and didn't find the practice to be problematic.
"I've had no interest when someone asks for an interview mid-round or suggests trying something new,"
He further added:
"But I also know how much the fans love those moments-hearing our thought processes, conversations with our caddies, our reactions to the shots, and understanding the ups and downs of competing at the highest level. I've recently done mid-round interviews at both Hero and Sentry and found them totally fine and easy,"
Justin Thomas also said that players might not find these interviews "important or interesting", but insisted that the fans appreciated it. Northern Irish golfer Rory McIlroy said last year, that the bitter split between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf has "fatigued" fans and turned them away from mens golf.
