Hideki Matsuyama won the first leg of the 2024 FedEx Cup playoffs. He registered his second victory of the season by winning the 2024 FedEx St. Jude Championship at TPC Southwind in Memphis. He dominated the greens with a hot putter throughout the event and led the SG Putting stat.
Surprisingly, the Japanese golfer asked for a putting lesson from a former pro golfer and NBC golf analyst, Brad Faxon. The former pro golfer wanted to look at Matsuyama's putter, saying he is a Scotty Cameron geek. While looking at the putter, Matsuyama suddenly asked for a putting lesson from Faxon.
"Can I have a putting lesson? And he says it to me in English. I looked at him. I swear to you. He goes, Can I have a putting lesson? I started laughing," Faxon said while talking to PGA Tour Radio.
"I said, Hideki, you're leading by five. You're putting first on the tour this week. I said I want a putting lesson from you. And I don't know that he thought that was very funny. I thought it was funny. And then Bobby's Well, Bob Turner came up because he's serious. He wants to know what you like about his putting, and I'm like, boy, is this a bad situation to be in here," Faxon said.
Brad Faxon was surprised as Hideki Matsuyama led the event by five strokes, and he was not sure what advice he should give to the Japanese golfer. He decided not to provide technical advice or something that might confuse him.
So he gave just two tips about bouncing putter and the squareness of his setup and posture. He also recalled a story from Ben Crenshaw, who said he liked the softness in the arms and the shoulders.
"I don't know if I can do that, but thank you so much," Matsuyama said.
Hideki Matsuyama's interpreter, Bob Turner, thanked Faxon and said Hideki knows how good a putter you were and how you assisted Rory McIlroy.
