Yes, Jon Rahm can play the Ryder Cup based on Team Europe's new qualification rule given he doesn't lose his DP World Tour card. Jon Rahm has represented Europe thrice in the Ryder Cup. He did so in 2018, 2021 and 2023. The 2025 Ryder Cup will be played at Bethpage Black in Farmingdale, New York.

Twelve players play for each team in the Ryder Cup. Of them, six players are picked by the captain and six players qualify through their performances. Jon Rahm is likely to be picked by the captain. However, to be eligible for the Ryder Cup, Rahm will have to maintain his DP World Tour card.

Rahm joined LIV Golf early this year. However, unlike Sergio Garcia, Ian Poulter, and Lee Westwood, Rahm has remained a member of the DP World Tour. But, to maintain his membership, he'll have to pay fines for playing in LIV events. Talking about it during the Open Championship 2024, Rahm said (via Mirror Sport):

"We're still in conversations with the Tour. I haven't been able to play any Tour events, so yeah, we're going to have to sort it out... I haven't paid [fines] yet, but again, I just don't know when I'm going to play."

To maintain the DP World Tour card, Rahm will have to play a minimum of four events this year. DP World Tour recently confirmed that the Olympics will be counted as one of the events. However, the Majors won't be counted for it.

So, Jon Rahm has to play three more events on the European Tour this year to be eligible to be picked by Team Europe's captain Luke Donald. The captain is most likely to pick him as he has earned 7.5 points out of 12 points for Team Europe in the three Ryder Cups so far.

Team Europe has also announced new qualification rules for the 2025 Ryder Cup. Donald said that only a single points list will be considered for six automatic qualifiers. The list will give more weight to Major championships, PGA Tour signature events, and DP World Tour Rolex Series events. The breakdown of available points is as follows:

  • Major championships: 5,000
  • 2025 PGA Tour signature events/Players/FedExCup playoffs: 3,000
  • DP World Tour Rolex Series events: 2,000
  • 2025 PGA Tour regular FedExCup events: 2,000
  • DP World Tour “Back 9” events: 1,500
  • DP World Tour “Global Series” events: 1,000
  • 2025 PGA Tour opposite-field events: 1,000

Further, no points have been allocated for the LIV Golf events. Talking about the new qualification rules, DP World Tour chief Guy Kinnings said (via Yahoo Sports):

"This is without question a much cleaner and simpler qualification system than the ones utilized in previous years, and we thank Luke and his vice captains Edoardo Molinari and Thomas Bjorn for their vital input over the past few months."

Jon Rahm says that Ryder Cup and Olympic weeks are the most meaningful in his career

Jon Rahm recently participated in the 2024 Paris Olympics. The men's golf event concluded on Sunday, August 4 at Le Golf National in France.

As the Olympics doesn't have an official payout, Rahm won no money. Talking about it, he said (via Golfweek):

"Two of the most meaningful weeks in my career is two events where we make no money. And I've said that a million times, and I'll say it again because the Ryder Cup and this one are up there."
"It's different to the Ryder Cup. It's different. It's not a major either. But I feel like it's almost the ultimate prize representing your country. And yeah, I mean, that's what makes it so special," he added.

Jon Rahm finished tied at 5th after a score of 15-under 269. He was tied on the top of the leaderboard after the third round with Xander Schauffele. Rahm started strongly in the final round and notched six birdies in the first ten holes. He was leading by four strokes.

However, disaster struck in the next eight holes where he scored four bogeys, a double bogey and only managed a birdie. He lost out on a medal which looked comfortable after the 10th hole on the final day. Talking about his performance, he said via the aforementioned source:

"I don't remember the last time I played a tournament and I felt this. I not only feel like I let myself down but to just not get it done for the whole country of Spain, it's a lot more painful than I would like it to be."

Jon Rahm will now tee off at LIV Golf Greenbrier at The Old White at The Greenbrier from August 16-18.
