The 2023 World Wide Technology Championship is moving to the Tiger Woods-designed El Cardonal Course located at Diamante Cabo San Lucas in Mexico. Earlier, the event was hosted by Mayakoba.
However, Mayakoba decided to host the LIV Golf season opener last month, which resulted in them losing the hosting rights of the World Wide Technology Championship.
The PGA Tour announced the news on Twitter:
Golf Twitter had mixed opinions on this news. Here's a look at some of the reactions on Twitter:
"Certainly no conflict of interests here"
"Are y'all taking late sign-ups? I want to play. I got $75 for the entry fee."
"Something about links next to the ocean 😍🤩😍🤩"
"Cabo San Lucas is such a great spot for this tournament!! The resorts and golf courses in the area are some of the best in Mexico! It makes for a great golf trip destination!"
"While golf fans appreciate the effort to 'mic up' players (great idea, mine I believe) perhaps something a little more current tech than having a player stick in ear buds while walking up the fairway. That is BUSH league."
"Can we get a Tiger Woods design course in south east Michigan"
'Tiger got a lot more leverage within PGA Tour for declining the $700 mln from LIV"
"Tiger Woods the new Pete Dye 😭"
"Mayakoba is about to learn - they went to bed with LIV and are about to lose the PGA event that got them 100x the exposure. Short term gain, long term loss. These resorts use hosting the event as marketing, their marketing guy made a huge mistake."
"Can we talk about how essentially Tiger has been beatch slapping Norman off the course too. The new TGL league with worlds best, now this. I mean it's hilarious. Guys like Fred Couples must be laughing their asses off about it all"
"Petty. Not surprised. I’ll be pissed if there’s not a cave in the middle of the fairway at this new course wtf"
"Things that make you go hmm 🤔"
"El Cardonal is way better anyway"
"Tiger got a lot more leverage within PGA Tour for declining the $700 mln from LIV"
"Is it going to be ran by tgr?"
"It looks beautiful"
Ken Jowdy, CEO of Legacy Properties and developer of Diamante, said they were honored to host the WWT Championship in Los Cabos.
"Hosting the World Wide Technology Championship will have an incredible impact on Los Cabos and bring unmatched exposure to our region." Jowdy was quoted saying via PGA Tour. "We are thankful to WWT and the PGA TOUR for bringing this world-class event to Diamante.”
Tiger Woods-designed El Cardonal at Diamante details
El Cardonal was opened in 2014, becoming the first golf course designed by Tiger Woods and TGR Design. The El Cardonal is the par-72, 7,300-yard golf course situated at a scenic location surrounded by views of the Pacific Ocean. The golf course is located in a private resort called Diamante in the city of Los Cabos in the Mexican state of Baja California Sur.
Alongside El Cardonal, Diamante also has the Davis Love III-designed Dunes Course. It also has another TGR-designed Oasis Short Course, which is a 12-hole, par-3 course.
