As per reports, the PGA Tour will have no cuts after 36 holes in a few designated events. This decision came out surprisingly given how LIV Tour was criticized for having a 48-man field and no cut in 54-hole events.
The LIV Golf's official handle took a jibe at the PGA and tweeted:
"Imitation is the greatest form of flattery. Congratulations PGA Tour. Welcome to the future."
LIV Golf's Ian Poulter and Lee Westwood were quick to comment on the news.
Poulter tweeted:
"Sounds somewhat familiar… 🤷🏼♂️ Now I can’t wait to hear all the back tracking of comments from the last 7 months. 👂🏼"
This was not the only tweet he made regarding the PGA's new changes.
"Oh my my my…. When will the penny drop with so many of what’s actually happened here. 🤷🏼♂️ It really doesn’t take a 🚀 👩🏼🔬 to work out. And sounds very similar to another product that’s been spoken so badly about by Media and commentators. I’m all ears now 👂🏼 I’m waiting," another tweet of his read.
Westwood tweeted:
“I’ve spent the last year reading how good full fields and cuts are.”
Here's a look at a few more reactions by Golf Twitter:
"Jay Monahan in 2022: 'Those who play in the LIV Golf "exhibitions" are missing out on the legacy, competitiveness and tradition of the PGA Tour.' PGA Tour in 2023: we’re going to have a series of limited field, no cut events with guaranteed money. The hypocrisy is astounding."
"So next year we’ll have 10ish PGA Tour events with no cut and limited fields of mostly the same players. Definitely an easier product to sell to advertisers and sponsors. Guys can play their way in, sure. But, it must be said, it does sound awfully similar to another golf tour."
"So whether it’s LIV or now the PGA Tour, as someone who has played competitively for years now, removing the cut is one of the worst things to happen to the game in the last 12 months. Rant over."
"It keeps the stars there for four days" - Rory McIlroy defends PGA Tour's new change
While LIV Golf supporters and many critics have raised questions against the PGA Tour's new changes, Rory McIlroy has defended the PGA Tour. He answered the questions at the Arnold Palmer Invitational's pre-event press conference on Tuesday.
McIlroy said that he supports the no-cut concept of the Tour, although the tournaments' numbers are yet to be finalized. He said the no-cut events have always been on the Tour.
“The only reason no-cut events are a big deal is because LIV has come along," he said. “There’s been no-cut events since I’ve been a member of the Tour and way beyond that as well. Is there going to be a few more of them? Maybe.
"It keeps the stars there for four days. You ask Mastercard or whoever it is to pay $20m for a golf event, they want to see the stars at the weekend. They want a guarantee the stars are there," he added.
He further stated that they were "selling a product" at the end of the day.
