Fans on social media have reacted to Viktor Hovland parting with his swing coach Joe Mayo for the second time ahead of the start of the 2025 PGA Tour. The Norwegian golfer had recently revealed in his interview with NorskGolf.com that he is no longer working with Mayo, having parted ways last month.
This is the second time that the duo has split. Mayo and Hovland previously parted ways ahead of the 2024 PGA Tour season. Hovland then worked with Grant Waite and Dana Dahlquist before getting back to work with Mayo ahead of the 2024 PGA Championship.
Nuclr Golf shared news about the split of Viktor Hovland and Joe Mayo on its X (formerly Twitter) account, writing:
"#PARTING WAYS — Viktor Hovland & his swing coach Joe Mayo have split once again, with Hovland telling @espenblaker: "We disagreed a bit about the way forward.”
Fans jumped to the comment section and were critical of the separation.
"Hovland is cooked," a fan wrote.
"There goes the short game again," one more fan said.
Several other fans shared their disappointment with the split.
"How can victor disagree when his game fell of the planet when he fired him the first time and got his game back when he rehired him?" another fan wrote.
"Viktor Hovland will never be the # 1 ranked golfer until he stops playing with his swing," another fan jotted.

Viktor Hovland opens up about his split with coach Joe Mayo
In his recent interview with Norsk Golf, Viktor Hovland opened up about his split with Joe Mayo. He revealed that they "disagreed a bit" about the way forward and decided to part ways. Speaking of their split, Hovland said:
"We disagreed a bit about the way forward, what is best for me. I feel that I have learned so much now and have so much competence that I don't need anyone to hold my hand anymore. It's always good to have someone to watch what I'm doing, check out the steps I'm taking. So I send some videos to another coach, but he's more like a consultant. I am the one in charge of my own turn."
Notably, Hovland was expected to make his much-anticipated return to the greens this week at the Sentry Tournament, the season-opening PGA Tour event, which will take place from January 2 to 5. Unfortunately though, Hovland broke his pinky-toe finger and is still not sure if he can play in the event.
In the interview with Norsk Golf, Hovland also spoke about his injury and said:
"I had been home in Norway for Christmas vacation, traveled all the way to Hawaii, and when I finally locked myself in here in the hotel room, I was so tired that I fell asleep on the bed with my clothes on. I woke up again in the middle of the night, and when I staggered to my feet to undress and turn off the light, I kicked the corner of the bed."
Hovland had last competed at the 2024 Tour Championship, where he shot four rounds of 69, 71, 65, and 66 and tied for 12th place.
