David Puig will make his Olympic debut in a week when he represents Spain at the Paris Olympics 2024. Puig will join Jon Rahm, Carlota Ciganda, and Azahara Muñoz at Le Golf National.
Puig's Olympic debut was the subject of questions during his interview ahead of the LIV Golf United Kingdom, which begins Friday, July 26, at the JCB Golf and Country Club in Staffordshire, England.
This was part of what Puig told the media, including Sportskeeda:
"It means the world to me. I think I put a lot of hard work and a lot of miles, a lot of travel to different countries on LIV and Asian Tour, so traveling a lot, working a lot, but it paid off and I'm super proud, and I'm excited to represent Spain next week."
Qualification for the Olympic Games was based on the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR). To qualify, Puig played four Asian Tour events as events on LIV Golf are not awarded world ranking points by the OWGR.
On the Asian Tour, Puig won the Malaysian Open, finished T10 in the International Series Oman, T2 in the International Series Macau, and T5 in the Saudi Open. He also earned points for a 55th place finish at the US Open.
His efforts on the OWGR-sanctioned tours and events made him the second-highest ranked Spaniard golfer in the world behind Jon Rahm and qualified him for the Olympic Games.
It's not the first national team appearance for David Puig
Although this is his first Olympic appearance, it is not the first time that Puig has represented Spain. Puig was a part of the national team eight times during his amateur career.
The Spaniard represented his country at the 2018 and 2019 European Boys Team Championships, the 2021 and 2022 European Amateur Team Championships, the 2018 Summer Youth Olympics, the 2018 and 2019 Junior Golf World Cup, and the 2022 Eisenhower Trophy.
Puig has also played on the European teams that competed in the 2018 Junior Ryder Cup, the 2018 and 2019 Jacques Léglise Trophy, and the 2020 and 2021 Arnold Palmer Cup.
David Puig's form ahead of LIV Golf United Kingdom
Puig has played in all 10 LIV Golf events to date. He has one top 10 finish, a tie for third at LIV Golf Houston, which is his best finish of the season to date.
His team, Fireballs GC, has won one event (Andalusia) and clinched two other podium finishes so far this season. The team is sixth in the standings while Puig is 31st on the individual list.
The Spaniard has played in three of the four Majors (PGA Championship, US Open, Open Championship), although he only made the cut at the US Open. He tied for 55th at the event.
