Nico Echavarria won the 2024 Zozo Championship on Sunday (October 27). The Colombian golfer carded a final-round 67 at Accordia Golf Narashino Country Club in Chiba to take the win. He beat Justin Thomas and Max Greyserman by one stroke to bag the $1,530,000 winner’s paycheck in Japan.
Apart from the hefty paycheck, Echavarria secured a spot in the 2025 Masters. It is pertinent to note that this is the golfer’s second win on the PGA Tour. He’d earlier won the Puerto Rico Open in 2023. However, he earned only 300 FedExCup points, unlike the usual payout of 500. The event didn’t give out a full allocation of FedExCup points as it was an Additional Event on the schedule.
Despite falling short in 2023, Nico Echavarria bounced back this weekend to win the Zozo Championship and earn the full 500 FedExCup points. The 30-year-old will tee up at Augusta National next year. He also earned spots in THE PLAYERS Championship and the PGA Championship.
The FedExCup points also helped him make a massive leap in the season standings. The victory vaulted him from No. 113 in the standings to No. 65. The golfer sat in the Aon Next 10 and stepped nearer to the top-60, who’d earn entry into the first two signature events of 2025 - AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and Genesis Invitational. Notably, the champion golfer’s circuit membership exemption also got extended through 2026.
Echavarria, who turned professional in 2017, also jumped a whopping 190 spots in the Official World Golf Rankings on Sunday. He leapt from 292 to 102 after the Zozo Championship win, missing out on the top 100 by two spots.
Nico Echavarria wins 2024 Zozo Championship
Nico Echavarria shot 5-under 65 in the third round on Saturday. He followed it up with a 3-under 67 on Sunday to finish at 20-under 260 at the Accordia Golf Narashino Country Club in Japan. The Colombian golfer took the 2024 Zozo Championship victory by shooting one over Max Greyserman and Justin Thomas.
Following the win, Echavarria noted that his win at the 2023 Puerto Rico Open helped build confidence.
Nico Echavarria told the Golf Channel, as quoted by pgatour.com:
“I took a lot from that and just kept myself calm. It was very fun, that was a lot of fun with these two guys battling it out… It’s been a lot of work, it’s been a lot of rough weeks. But moments like this are the ones that make everything better. It’s the second win on the PGA Tour, not a lot of people get to win two times on the PGA Tour.”
Meanwhile, Thomas finished the final round alongside Greyserman and the champion golfer with a 66. The 15-time PGA Tour winner, who hasn’t won on the circuit since the 2022 PGA Championship, fell short this weekend. Greyserman, who is yet to win on the Tour, fumbled a brief one-shot lead towards the end to share T2.
