Rory McIlroy sits comfortably above the cutline after shooting a round of 68 on Friday, September 20, at the 2024 BMW PGA Championship. The DP World Tour event was suspended during its second round on Friday and will resume on Saturday, September 21. After the suspended play, the projected cutline is 2-under, and McIlroy, who completed his round, sits at 9-under. He is seven strokes ahead of the projected cutline.
The Northern Irish golfer had a solid start with a round of 5-under 67 on Thursday, September 19, and maintained his good form even in the second round. He shot seven birdies in the first round, including four back-to-back birdies from the third to sixth holes. However, he also made two bogeys in the opening round, finishing with a score of 67. In the second round, the World No. 3 shot five birdies and a bogey for a 4-under 68.
Some players have yet to complete their second round, so the confirmed leaderboard of the tournament will be determined after play resumes. On Saturday, the second round of the 2024 BMW PGA Championship will resume at 7:10 a.m. local time, followed by the start of round 3 at 9:00 a.m. local time.
"Pretty pleased with where I'm at on the leaderboard"- Rory McIlroy opens up about his performance at 2024 BMW PGA Championship
During the press conference of the tournament on September 20, Rory McIlroy was asked about his performance this week. The four-time Major winner acknowledged that it was good and stated that he was pleased with his position on the leaderboard.
Speaking of his performance, McIlroy said (via ASAP Sports):
"It's been good. I think it's been solid. I think 9-under is probably a fair reflection of how I've played over the first couple days. You know, when I've missed some greens, my short game has been pretty good and I got up-and-down. A couple key saves on 14 and 17 coming in, and then birdies at 16 and 18 were nice, as well.
"So yeah, overall, pretty pleased with where I'm at on the leaderboard. There's a couple of scrappy things in there that I'm industrial trying to sort of iron out of the game but overall, pretty happy with where I'm at," he added.
After two solid rounds, Rory McIlroy settled in a two-way tie for fourth place with Matteo Manassero, who also shot 68 in the second round. Meanwhile, Matthew Baldwin, the opening-round leader, extended his lead even after the second round.
Niklas Norgaard finished solo second, followed by Antoine Rozner, who jumped 20 positions after his remarkable bogey-free round of 7-under 65. However, the final leaderboard of the second round will be revealed after all the players complete their rounds on Saturday, September 21.
