Sergio Garcia didn't qualify for the Open Championship 2024. The fourth and final Major of the year will be played from July 18 to 21 at Royal Troon Golf Club in South Ayrshire, Scotland.
LIV golfer and Fireballs GC star Garcia participated in the Open Championship final qualifying event at Liverpool's West Lancashire Golf Club. He shot a 71 in the first round and a 70 in the second. The Spaniard scored 3 under and tied for sixth, however, only the top four players from the qualifying event advanced to Royal Troon.
Sergio Garcia recently won the LIV Golf Andalucia event. However, for LIV golfers there is no direct pathway to qualify for Majors through their performances in LIV Golf. Further, they also don't receive the OWGR points, making qualifying for the Majors a challenge.
Sixteen players qualified for the 2024 Open Championship from the four final qualifying events at four sites. Sergio Garcia failed to make the cut by two shots. After failing to qualify, he said (via ESPN):
"I come here and I try my hardest to get into The Open. It would be nice to make The Open my 100th Major, but it was tough conditions and sometimes things don't go your way. ... I tried everything that I could and that's all I can ask myself for."
Sam Horsfield was the only LIV golfer among the four LIV players to qualify from West Lancashire. The four players with scores in 36 holes are:
- Matthew Dodd-Berry (a) (69-69)
- Sam Horsfield (69-69)
- Daniel Brown (71-68)
- Masahiro Kawamura (70-69)
LIV golfers Kieran Vincent and Carlos Ortiz also failed to qualify for the event from West Lancashire.
Abraham Ancer was the only LIV golfer to qualify from Burnham & Berrow. LIV golfers Laurie Canter and Anirban Lahiri failed to qualify for the event. The four players to qualify from Burnham & Berrow are as follows:
- Justin Rose (66-68)
- Dominic Clemons (a) (66-68)
- Charlie Lindh (67-70)
- Abraham Ancer (65-72)
LIV golfer Peter Uihlein teed up at Dundonald Links for the final qualifying event but finished T18 with 3-over par. The four players to qualify from Dundonald Links are as follows:
- Sam Hutsby (67-69)
- Angel Hidalgo (70-69)
- Liam Nolan (a) (69-70)
- Jack McDonald (71-69)
All three LIV golfers Graeme McDowell, Eugenio Chacarra and Branden Grace, who teed up at Royal Cinque Ports, failed to qualify for the 152nd Open. The four players to qualify from Royal Cinque Ports are as follows:
- Matthew Southgate (71-67)
- Elvis Smylie (67-74)
- Jaime Montojo Fernandez (a) (71-70)
- Luis Masaveu (a) (72-70)
Therefore, only two of the 11 LIV golfers that attempted to qualify through final qualifying event will make it to Royal Troon this year.
