Former PGA Tour star Pablo Larrazabal joined the LIV Golf League in 2022. The Spaniard left the Saudi-backed league just a few months later and now plays on the DP World Tour.
Larrazabal sparked several conversations in the golf world following his appearance at the 2024 BMW International Open last week. After missing the cut at the event, the former PGA Tour player complained on social media about the slow play at the tournament.
Larrazabal stated that several DP World Tour players should pay fines due to their issues with maintaining the pace of play. He said (via Bunkered):
"There are a good 15-20 (DP World Tour players) that are over the time by far. We cannot do anything until the tournament committee puts in harder rules. ... To pay £100,000 in one year in the slow play is not enough. They still win golf tournaments playing slow. ... These guys have enough money to pay a 20 grand fine. Penalize them."
The DP World Tour has been trying to facilitate faster play on course. According to Eddie Pepperell, another golfer on the DP World Tour, a player from the tour had reportedly racked up fines worth $127,862 (£100,000) last year due to slow play.
Pablo Larrazabal is a firm believer that no round of golf should take over four hours to complete. The former LIV Golf player further argued that his fellow competitors' mental coaches are the main reason behind slow play on the course.
He believes that having more rules officials on the course should be a more effective way to fix the issue. Larrazabal said:
"Mental coaches are most of the problems. When they tell you don’t hit the ball until you’re ready, that’s a big problem. Practice rounds are slow. Everything is slow. We have to get rid of five hour rounds. Golf has to take less than four hours. We have to work quicker and think less. ... Until we have 12 or 14 referees and they can catch all these slow guys, all these cheaters, we’re going to keep having problems. There are a good 15-20 (DP World Tour players) that are over the time by far. We cannot do anything until the tournament committee puts in harder rules.”
Pablo Larrazabal's tee time at the 2024 Genesis Scottish Open
Pablo Larrazabal's next appearance is at the DP World Tour's 2024 Genesis Scottish Open. He'll be among the players competing at the Renaissance Club from July 11 to 14, vying for a share of the whopping $9 million purse prize.
Ranked 150th on the Official World Golf Rankings, Larrazabal will tee off at 12:26 PM local time from the Renaissance Club's first hole. The 9-time DP World Tour winner is paired with Si Woo Kim and Romain Langasque for the first round of the tournament.
Larrazabal will tee off with the same group at 7:11 AM local time from the tenth tee for the second round of the 2024 Genesis Scottish Open. After the second round, a halfway cut will come into play.
Following a missed cut at last week's BMW International Open, the former LIV Golf player will need to perform well to make it through to the weekend.
