The FedEx Cup Playoff is set to kick off with the FedEx St. Jude Championship. The first of the three events will take place from Thursday, August 15, to Sunday, August 18, at TPC Southwind in Memphis, Tennessee.
The top 70 players in the standings will compete in Memphis to get inside the top 50. For the uninitiated, only the top 50 players will move on to Castle Pines Golf Club in Denver, Colorado, for the BMW Championship.
Since only the top 50 players will qualify for the second event of the FedEx Cup Playoff, several players will need a strong finish at the FedEx St. Jude Championship to get inside the safe zone.
Among the players at risk of exiting early is the defending FedEx Cup champion Viktor Hovland. Surprisingly, he has had an underwhelming season, with his third-place finish at the PGA Championship being his only top-ten result this season.
With ten missed cuts in thirteen appearances this season, Hovland is sitting at 57th in the season standings. He will need at least a 27th-place finish to qualify for the BMW Championship, where he is the reigning champion.
Nick Taylor won the WM Phoenix Open earlier this year but still ended up outside the top 50 in the standings. He made just two other top-ten finishes this season and missed seven cuts in 21 appearances. He is currently sitting in 52nd place, and a 69th-place finish at the FedEx St. Jude Championship will be enough to qualify for the season's penultimate event.
The other notable names include former FedEx Cup winners like Justin Rose and Jordan Spieth.
