With the emergence of the LIV Golf league in 2022, there has been a massive divide in the golf world. Fans have since longed to see their favorite players compete in the same event together without any tension between them.
According to recent reports, the players from the two tours will reunite and face off against each other. Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler will reportedly take on LIV Golf stars Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka in a made-for-TV match on TNT to be held in Las Vegas in December.
The news has left golf enthusiasts online excited. Following DeChambeau's win at the 2024 US Open, fans have been eager to watch the LIV Golfer compete against the world number one, Scheffler.
One fan wrote on X (formerly Twitter):
"Holy s--t they giving us what we want"
Some fans feel that the LIV Golf vs PGA Tour tournament should be played on a larger scale, involving more players from both tours. As the event is purely for television, they reasoned that a larger field would boost the viewership. A fan wrote:
"Just make it a full on Ryder Cup like affair. 8 or 12 guys on each team and let’s go. Pure television right there."
Here are a few other fans' reactions to the exciting match between the pair of McIlroy, Scheffler, and DeChambeau, Koepka.
"Epic matchup for the first PGA vs LIV match," a fan wrote.
"It should have been X man and Scottie," another user wrote.
"Scottie is above this side circus," a fan commented.
"This match is definitely worth watching, regardless of leagues," a fan opined.
Scottie Scheffler blames LIV Golf for disappointment amongst fans
As multiple players left the PGA Tour in 2022 and 2023 to join the Saudi-backed LIV Golf league, fans were left disappointed as they could not see their favorite players compete together.
Scottie Scheffler spoke about the subject during the 2024 Players Championship and claimed that the former PGA Tour players are to be blamed. The Olympic gold medalist said (via Golfweek):
"If fans are upset, then look at the guys that left. We had a Tour, we were all together, and the people that left are no longer here. At the end of the day, that's where the splintering comes from. I think we're trying to do our best to create the best product for the fans, but we can't control whether or not guys want to leave. If guys want to go take the money and leave, then that's their decision."
