"Go f*** yourself" - 'Offended' Presidents Cup Captain Jim Furyk unloads on reporter during interview

United States Presidents Cup captain Jim Furyk recently responded to golf journalist Adam Schupak for his suggestion that the International team also needs to win to energize the matches. The US team has been dominant at the Presidents Cup over the last few editions and are yet to lose a match since 2005.

Schupak recalled joining some of the American Presidents Cup members, including Wyndham Clark and Jim Furyk, on the eve of last week's Procore Championship, and wrote about it in his column for Golf Week. They had a discussion about the upcoming team event, where Schupak put forward his notion and talked about the International team. He said:

“Nothing personal. But the competition really needs an International Team victory to energize the matches.”

Joining the conversation, Jim Furyk shared a story of a high-ranking PGA Tour official from the 2017 Presidents Cup without revealing the name and stated how offended he was when the person tried to wish him luck for the prestigious team event. But Furyk was offended by the way the person had said it.

“Just the way he said it, it was so back-handed. I said, ‘You know, I’m not exactly sure I know what that’s supposed to mean,’ ” Furyk said (via Golf Week).

The US captain further talked about the hard work the team and players put in to win their matches and said that he was very offended by Schupak's question.

“Do you know how hard, how many hours, the captains work to try to win these matches?" Furyk said. Do you know how hard and how much effort the players, how hard they take it when they don’t play well? I’ve seen grown men cry in the locker room because they’re upset and I’ve seen how much it means to them when they do play well. I know what you’re saying, but do you know how offended I am?"

The 54-year-old then told Schupak:

"So it’s not like I’m killing you right now, but F**k you. Go f**k yourself. You can quote me on that one."

The upcoming edition of the tournament that started in 1994, will take place from September 24 to 29.

Unstoppable US team holds firm grip on Presidents Cup glory

The US team holds a strong grip on the Presidents Cup. They have only lost one tournament and tied in another edition since the inception of the competition in 1994.

In the first edition of the event, Team USA defeated the International team by 20-12. That year, Hale Irwin was the captain, while David Graham led the International team.

Team USA won the first two editions but lost in the third edition in 1998. That year, the International team, led by Peter Thomson, won the tournament held at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club by 20 ½ to 11 ½. However, the US team bounced back and won in 2000, and in 2003, the event resulted in a tie.

Since 2005, the US team has been dominant and has not lost any edition of the Presidents Cup. The last time the event was held at Quail Hollow Club, the United States registered a victory by 17 ½ to 12 ½. Davis Love III was the team captain. Tiger Woods led the USA team to victory in the 2019 Presidents Cup in Melbourne.
