Graeme McDowell addresses suspension claiming LIV punished him for using Vicks nasal spray

Graeme McDowell has received a one-tournament suspension for breaching LIV Golf's Anti-doping policy. The 2010 US Open champion will not compete at the upcoming LIV Golf Greenbrier, starting on August 16th at The Old White Golf Course.

The 45-year-old addressed this suspension on his X account and explained how severe congestion during LIV Golf Nashville was the reason for it.

McDowell said he used a generic Vicks nasal decongestant and did not realize it might be on the banned list. However, he agreed it was his mistake and said he has accepted the sanctions imposed by LIV.

"As a professional golfer, I understand the importance of checking all medications and the option to apply for a Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUE). Unfortunately, I did not think to do this due to the over-the-counter nature of this medicine, and I deeply regret the oversight. I fully accept the sanctions imposed by LIV," Graeme MacDowell wrote.

He said LIV Golf's Anti-Doping Policy is designed to be transparent, unlike other tours. LIV Golf adheres to these rules strictly, so it was challenging for the former US Open champion, but he respects the rules and penalties.

"However, I respect the need for these rules and penalties - they are essential for maintaining the integrity of the sport. I'm proud of my 22-year career and the way I've conducted myself throughout it. Now, I'm focused on moving forward and getting back on the golf course. I look forward to seeing everyone at LIV Chicago!" MacDowell concluded.

This news comes as a blow to Brooks Koepka and his teammates, as Graeme McDowell is a crucial member of the Smash GC. The team will have to play with an alternate player at LIV Golf Greenbrier, as McDowell will not be allowed to compete this week.

Graeme McDowell will be back from suspension at LIV Golf Chicago, the final event of the 2024 LIV Golf, before the final Team Championship. LIV Golf Chicago will begin on September 13th at the Bolingbrook Golf Club.

The British golfer is part of the Smash GC Team in LIV Golf and has a reasonable record this year. McDowell has registered three top 10 finishes, with his best performance coming at LIV Golf Las Vegas.

The 45-year-old joined LIV Golf in 2022. He was part of the Cleeks GC initially for two years and then moved to Smash GC in 2024. In the team championship, Smash GC is currently placed 7th in the standings and has little to no chance of winning the season-ending team championship.
