Greg Norman is no longer the CEO of LIV Golf as he has been replaced by Scott O'Neil after serving out the duration of his contract. It's a big shift for the tour, and it leaves the Aussie without a clear role in the future.
That doesn't mean Norman is done with the tour. He had said in the past that he would stay on with LIV after his CEO contract ends, and he's staying true to his word.
In a recent official announcement, LIV confirmed that Norman would remain involved on a day-to-day basis but not as CEO.
“Once my official tenure at LIV is up, which is August 31st of this year, I will stay involved with LIV in some way, shape or form. I’m going to stay on the board. So there will be that part of my life, but it won’t be as consuming as what it was before," Norman said.
He continued, adding that when he reflects on the past years as CEO, he believes he's "changed the game of golf more" than anyone realizes right now. As for what's next, he said he wanted to do more course design.
The outgoing CEO said:
“I’d like to double the portfolio of golf courses I’ve opened. I’ve done 124 now. I’d love to have 250 done in the next whatever number of years. So, no retirement. Slow down, yes. But no retirement.”
Norman has been the CEO of LIV Golf since it was formed in 2021 and guided it through several monumental changes since then. He hands it off to Scott O'Neil on the back of a growing player count and a brand-new TV deal with FOX.
Greg Norman reacts to TGL
Greg Norman hasn't been watching Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy's new league, but he still believes it's a good thing for the sport. As someone who tried to change the game and make it more modern, he respects what TGL is doing.
He said via Australian Golf Digest:
“No, I haven’t watched a bit of it because there’s a couple of players who’ve been very vocal against me. So I’m not going to say anything positive or negative about it. All I can say is: the more golf gets exposure in different ways, the better off it is."
Greg Norman believes that TGL is likely to draw more eyeballs towards the game and therefore wishes success to the event:
“I think innovation is a wonderful thing, I’m not going to belittle that. I wish them all the very best and success because it’s the market, right? They’re going to be pulling people into the game of golf."
TGL plays on Tuesdays, and it currently does not involve any LIV Golf members. That could change, however, as Mike McCarley has hinted at adding LIV members in the future.
