Justin Rose and Xander Schauffele were tied on T2 after the end of the third round at the Open Championship 2024. Both were looking to win their first Open Championship and the second Major of their respective golf careers. Rose had won his first Major back in 2013, while Schauffele won it just two months ago.
In the final round, Xander Schauffele came at the top and Justin Rose's wait for a second Major continued. Schauffele won the 152nd Open by two strokes over Rose at Royal Troon.
In the post-tournament press conference, the latter was asked about Xander's performance on the fourth day. He said (via ASAP Sports):
"A guy at the top of his game, a guy that has all the attributes that make him a great player and a great champion. He's obviously now learning that the winning is easy."
Justin Rose appreciated the World No. 2's golf game. The 43-year-old said that the American has a lot of horsepower and he excels with the wedge, putter, and iron play. Justin Rose further said (via ASAP Sports):
"I think probably one of his most unappreciated ones is his mentality. He's such a calm guy out there. I don't know what he's feeling, but he certainly makes it look very easy. He plays with a freedom, which kind of tells you as a competitor that he's probably not feeling a tonne of the bad stuff."
Schauffele won $3.1 million while Rose earned $1.44 million from the total prize money of $17 million of the Open Championship 2024.
The English player was also asked about his overriding emotion. He said (via ASAP Sports):
"Gutted when I walked off the course and it hit me hard because I was so strong out there today. I kind of got off to the start I wanted. I really played the way I wanted to today."
Justin Rose on the turning point at The Open Championship 2024
Justin Rose has had four runner-up finishes, 11 top-5 finishes, and 22 top-10 in 81 starts at the Majors. After the front nine in the final round of The Open Championship 2024, Justin Rose was ahead of the eventual winner Xander Schauffele.
On the back nine, Schauffle scored four birdies while Rose notched two birdies but also suffered a bogey. Talking about it he said:
"Yeah, just a critical moment midway through the back nine just momentum-wise. Obviously Xander got it going. I hit a couple of really good putts that didn't fall, and then suddenly that lead stretched."
