Jason Day established himself as fashion icon after sporting some insanely fashionable pieces from his sponsor, Malbon Golf, in 2024. The brand's founder, Stephen Malbon, reportedly appreciated his sartorial choices at the recently concluded Farmers Insurance Open.
Day sported a multi-colored Malbon sweater bearing the graffiti of a golf course set against beautiful blue skies during the final round of the Farmers Insurance Open on Saturday. He had paired the picturesque sweater with khaki trousers, white shoes and a visor. The Australian golfer also wore a white shirt underneath.
While apparel sponsors may give suggestions regarding a golfer's outfit during tournaments, Malbon reportedly mentioned that Day's attires during the entire Farmers Insurance Open week had been decided by himself. He said:
"We actually didn't script him this week. Guy's a legend. What he's worn all week is part of his personal collection of Malbon gear, so he dressed himself, and I think he did it quite well."
Editor and writer, Ben Boskovich, posted Malbon's quote on his X account on Sunday.
Jason Day started his campaign at Torrey Pines with an all-black full sweat suit from Malbon Golf. He followed it up with a dark shirts for the second and third rounds.
"I’m not trying to smash it into everyone’s face" - Jason Day on his fashion statements on the course
Jason Day burst onto the golf fashion scene after he signed with Malbon Golf in 2024. He was among the slew of golfers who had quit Nike at the time.
After the split with Nike, Day was reportedly looking for more comfortable options to wear during tournaments as opposed to the typical attires of slim trousers and shirts that the PGA Tour golfers are generally expected to wear. Malbon Golf is known for it's baggy and oversized clothes. Naturally, the Australian golfer and the brand became the best fit for each other.
After the partnership, Day changed his fashion on the course completely, wearing one stylish outfit after another. He was spotted wearing funky trousers, colorful sweaters, and fashionable vests at events. However, his new fashion game landed him in hot water when he was asked to remove his Malbon Golf vest at the Masters last year.
Golf has traditionally been very conservative over clothing choices. Although it's regulations are slowly getting more flexible, Jason Day still gets a lot of criticism for his uniforms on the course. However, the 37-year-old is not trying to defy anyone.
"I’m not trying to smash it into everyone’s face. I’m trying to wear something that makes me feel good and makes me feel confident and at the end of that I’m trying to get the ball in the hole in the least amount of strokes," he said via GQ in September 2024.
His fashion choices during his outing at the Farmers Insurance Open have attracted appreciation as well as criticism from fans.
