U.S. Amateur champion Sam Bennett is making a name for himself at the Masters. The golfer found his way to third place on Day 2 of the event. Even though he dropped a few points, Bennett still managed a T7 finish at the end of Day 3.
Bennett is having the time of his life. Having made a big impact, the 23-year-old was even called to the Masters Interview Room. It’s safe to assume that the amateur might not have guessed his ongoing dream run at Augusta.
One other thing he might not have imagined was the bad weather. Much like other golfers on the field, Bennett was also affected by severe rains on Saturday. The young golfer was finding the weather so cold that he eventually had to go casual clothes shopping between his rounds.
Speaking to the media, Sam Bennett admitted that he was finding it difficult to stay warm at Augusta. He said (as quoted by PGA Tour):
“Yesterday, I had to go to Dick’s and get some warmer clothes.”
It is pertinent to note that Bennett, like fellow golfers at Augusta, was fully drenched at the end of Day 3. The golfers were finding the cold weather too hard to play in.
Notably, tournament leader Brooks Koepka also came out to laud the officials for halting play due to the rains. The LIV golfer complained about the conditions and said added that he didn’t want to play in such severe weather.
Sam Bennett exudes confidence at Masters
Sam Bennett sat third on the 2023 Masters leaderboard on Friday when he exuded confidence in his game. The U.S. Amateur champion, who overtook many stalwarts to take a spot among the leaders, openly stated that he could go on to win the Green Jacket.
Speaking to the media in his post-round interview, Sam Bennett said (as quoted by Golfweek):
“Everybody coming into the week was, ‘I hope you get low (amateur).’ That’s pretty much all they were saying. I just wanted to put two good rounds up. I knew my golf was good enough to compete out here. I found myself in a situation that now I’ve got a golf tournament that I can go out and win.”
He added:
“I made the cut as an amateur. I kind of made my mark. I played steady golf. Now it’s time for me to go out and enjoy, soak it all in, be able to play the weekend at the Masters.”
It is pertinent to note that Sam Bennett will become the first-ever amateur to win the Masters if he manages to make a strong comeback on Sunday.
