Rory McIlroy initially didn't want anything to do with the Netflix documentary series Full Swing, which will be an in-depth look at the game of golf. He recently changed his mind and revealed why at the WM Phoenix Open.
He said via National Club Golfer:
“I sort of took the attitude of see how the first season works out, see if I like it, like the idea, feel comfortable letting cameras get into my life a little bit more. But I had a good chat with Chad [Mumm, Full Swing executive producer] in the summertime."
He specified that this was a critical time in the game of golf. Things are agitated, and McIlroy has been a bit of a guiding force, so he wanted to be in the documentary:
“Obviously with everything that’s going on in the world of golf, he just said having my voice in there in some way could just add a layer of context that wasn’t there already."
McIlroy also said he made sure he set the ground rules:
“I made sure that the parameters were very much like, look, you can film me–you’re not coming to my house, you’re not coming in my car, you’re not coming anywhere near my family, but you want to do some stuff with me at golf tournaments, totally fine."
The producers agreed, which is how McIlroy ended up in the Full Swing documentary.
Amid the ever-raging debate between LIV Golf and the PGA Tour, which will undoubtedly be a big part of the upcoming documentary series, McIlroy has become a central figure.
He's become one of the most avid detractors of LIV and one of the PGA Tour's loudest defenders. He's gone at it with Greg Norman, the LIV CEO, and top players like Patrick Reed.
That may have played a significant role in his decision to join the documentary. If he doesn't, then the PGA Tour has lost arguably its biggest ambassador in perhaps the biggest exposing event in its history.
Now is not the time for the Tour to be underrepresented, especially in something that millions will likely watch.
While Rory McIlroy isn't totally on board with the vulnerability a documentary often requires, he's interested in ensuring the record is set straight.
When does Full Swing ft. Rory McIlroy debut on Netflix?
The Netflix documentary is going to give fans an up-close look at the game of golf and feature stars like Rory McIlroy, Jordan Spieth, Ian Poulter, Collin Morikawa, Dustin Johnson, Tony Finau, Matt Fitzpatrick, Scottie Scheffler, Justin Thomas, Sahith Theegala, Joel Dahmen, Mito Pereira, and Cameron Young.
The first three episodes will drop on Netflix on February 15 at 12:00 am. As soon as the calendar turns to midnight after Valentine's Day, fans can binge what Netflix has brought to them about their favorite golf stars.
It will likely feature the LIV-PGA divide front and center, as that is easily the biggest thing in the game right now.
