Charlie Woods is playing at the 2024 US Junior Amateur Championship at Oakland Hills Country Club. His first round did not go according to plan, but he still received praise from Greg Norman's son.
Greg Norman Jr. used his X account (formerly Twitter) to congratulate Charlie Woods on qualifying for the tournament. This is what Norman Jr. posted:
"He is a really good kid and obviously has a fantastic swing. He has a monumental amount of pressure on him because of his name and the insane amount of press/exposure on him that his competitors don't have. Awesome to see Charlie qualify for US JR."
This is Charlie Woods' first experience at the US Junior Amateur Championship, a tournament in which his father, Tiger Woods, played four times and won on three consecutive occasions.
Charlie Woods qualified for the 2024 US Junior Amateur Championship by winning the qualifying event at Eagle Trace Golf Club in Coral Springs, Florida. He won with a 1-under 71.
The US Junior Amateur Championship is played over two rounds of stroke play with all 264 players in the field competing. After the first 36 holes, the top 64 advance to the final two days of match play.
A look at Charlie Woods' performance at the 2024 US Junior Amateur Championship and more
Charlie Woods shot a 12-over 82 in the first round of the US Junior Amateur Championship. His performance included two birdies, four bogeys and five double bogeys.
He began his second round on the 10th hole of the South Course at Oakland Hills Country Club. He parred the first two holes, bogeyed the third and made par on the fourth. His score for the event is 13 over and he is tied for 194th on the leaderboard. His father, Tiger Woods, was seen watching from the ropes.
There are some familiar names at the top of the leaderboard. Tyler Watts, ranked 119th in the world amateur rankings, leads the event after his first round of 65.
Tied for second are Mark Edwards and the well-known Miles Russell, who made headlines a few weeks ago with a top-25 finish in a Korn Ferry Tour event. Russell then made his PGA Tour debut at the Rocket Mortgage Classic.
Four players are tied for fourth, including Blades Brown, another teenager who recently made his PGA Tour debut. In his case, it came at the Myrtle Beach Classic.
Charlie began playing United States Golf Association (USGA) events this season. He had previously focused on local tournaments on the Florida Tour.
Earlier this year, he also tried to qualify for the PGA Tour's Cognizant Classic and the US Open. In both cases, he fell short.
