Netflix’s Full Swing set to showcase the behind-the-scenes of the PGA Tour series will have Rory McIlroy in a lead role. According to the show’s producers, the Irish golfer is an important element of the show with an “incredible” role.
With the Netflix series set to hit TV screens later this month, the show's executive producer Chad Mumm has now revealed that McIlroy was highly invested in the show. This came after fans were worried as the show’s initial list of players didn’t feature McIlroy. Later, the World No.1 made a brief appearance in the show's recent trailer.
Despite the trailers downplaying McIlroy's involvement in it, Mumm has stated that the golfer will have a big role. The show producer even claimed that the Irishman “was all in” for the project and was too excited to be a part of it.
Speaking to Mirror Sport about Rory McIlroy’s role in the Netflix show, Mumm said:
"We had to have a few surprises! That materialized during the season. We met with his team several times in the lead-up to the show. They were very honest on his focus being on his golf this season, and potentially engaged with him in series two.
"I sat down with him in the summer. We told him we needed his voice, there was no guarantee we could do this again and if he waits, people won't hear from him until 2024 at the earliest and now is the time, the golf world needs his voice. To Rory’s credit he was like ‘Yeah, I’m in’."
Executive producer Mumm went on to add that the Northern Irishman has been the most involved player in the process since.
"An hour later [after agreeing to be involved] he was wearing a microphone and walking around the locker room, having these private conversations that we were part of… He gave us more access in that period of time than we had got from anybody, it was incredible. He was always on our list, so give him a lot of credit for letting us in, because he certainly could have said no. From that moment on he was all in," Mumm added.
Rory McIlroy in the trailer of Full Swing
Netflix dropped the trailer of Full Swing on Wednesday, January 11. It witnessed some of the biggest names in the sport, including LIV Golf players. Apart from Rory McIlroy, Collin Morikawa, Justin Thomas, Scottie Scheffler, Jordan Spieth, Tony Finau, Matt Fitzpatrick, Sahith Theegala, Joel Dahmen, and Mito Pereira, were all featured in it.
One of the biggest surprises in the trailer was Rory McIlroy himself. The golfer swooped in towards the end of the video and said:
"If I want the game that I love to be played by future generations, the game needs to be pushed forward."
The line about the ‘future of the sport’ from Rory McIlroy added layers to the highly anticipated series. Fans were quick to point out that the show was bound to get real as a staunch LIV opponent like McIlroy was out there making such strong statements. Season one of the show will be out on February 15.
