Rory McIlroy's wait for his fifth major championship continued as he failed to make a cut at the Open Championship. His former manager, Chubby Chandler, believes his messy life is the reason behind his inconsistent performance at the majors.
On Friday, June 19, I shot 1-over 75 in the second round of the Open Championship after posting 78 on Day 1. He aggregated at 11-over and missed the cut by five strokes. This was quite unexpected considering he was one of the favorites and had entered the tournament with two back-to-back top-five finishes, including a runner-up finish at the US Open.
Speaking to talkSport, Chubby Chandler said that despite playing great in the last decade, Rory McIlroy didn't take any chances, which was keeping him short of wins at the big events. He also pointed out that the last two years had been quite messy for the Northern Irishman, which was distracting his mind.
"It looks like Rory has spent a year and a half fighting LIV for the PGA Tour," he said as per the Mirror. "Then the PGA Tour pulled the rug from under him, then he started talking about LIV not being too bad, then he had his marriage problems, and then he's got such media scrutiny because he hasn't won a major in ten years. So he just can't get away from it. I think his life is really messy.”
A couple of months ago, Rory McIlroy had announced that he was divorcing his wife, Erica Stoll. However, things took a turn in a few weeks, and the couple called off the divorce ahead of the US Open last month.
McIlroy had a tough outing at Pinehurst, where he blew away his two-shot lead after making three bogeys in the last five holes. This could have been his first major championship since the 2014 PGA Championship.
How did Rory McIlroy perform at the Open Championship?
Rory McIlroy shot 78 and 75 in two rounds at the Open Championship, missing the cut. He came to Royal Troon after a T4 finish at the Genesis Scottish Open, but he failed to get along with the course conditions this week.
McIlroy collected just three birdies in two rounds of the Open Championship and made seven bogeys, two doubles, and one triple. During the second round, the four-time major champion made three bogeys and a triple bogey on holes 3 to 6. He was error-free for the rest of the day, but the damage was too big to repair.
This was Rory's first missed cut at the majors since last year's Masters Tournament. Additionally, it was his first missed weekend at the Open since 2019.
