Scottie Scheffler recently mentioned that he plays with a 7 handicap when playing with his friends at home to level the playing field. However, fans online speculated that he might be bluffing and that his actual handicap is much higher.
Scheffler is set to compete in the Tour Championship, scheduled to take place from Thursday, August 29, to Sunday, September 1, at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta.
During the pre-event press conference on Tuesday, August 27, Scheffler revealed his handicap while playing with his friends.
"At home I'm typically playing to a plus 7," he said. "I used to be a plus 5. They moved me to a plus 7. So now we've got guys in the group that are getting like two strokes a hole. I typically still will win more often than not, I feel like, but it's just fun."
Fans online didn't believe that Scottie Scheffler would play off a plus-7 handicap. Here's a look at some of their reactions:
"Someone would have to rate PGA courses when they actually play them to get accurate info. He has to be at least +12," one fan wrote.
"Can't relate," another fan posted.
"Amazing. I played as a scratch in Met section events in NY back in the mid 80s and early 90s with +2 and +3 hdcps and they couldn’t even sniff “a” tour let alone the PGA tour," another fan remarked.
"Something really likeable about Scheffler," this fan commented.
"How do people not like this dude?? He's arguably the best in the world and still enjoys playing with his buddies that aren't very good," this fan opined.
"Actual tour pro.. giving a HONEST handicap. +7 makes sense because he’s actually great at golf, no one is scratch. Everyone has a great day and a terrible day. Salute to Scotty," this user wrote.
When will Scottie Scheffler begin his round at the Tour Championship on Thursday?
Scottie Scheffler will tee off on Thursday at 2:00 p.m. ET from the first hole alongside Xander Schauffele for the opening round of the Tour Championship.
Ahead of the season finale at East Lake, Scheffler has collected 6,615 FedEx Cup points and holds a 1,193-point lead over Schauffele. However, that could change depending on both players' performances this week.
Scottie Scheffler has won six events this season and recorded two runner-up finishes. Xander Schauffele has won two major championships this year, and if he wins the FedEx Cup, the debate for PGA Tour Player of the Year could take an interesting turn.
