Fans on social media linked Rory McIlroy to LIV Golf after the Northern Irish golfer mentioned plans to play fewer events on the PGA Tour in 2025. The World No. 3 recently discussed his schedule for the 2025 PGA Tour and reflected on his intention to reduce the number of events he competes in.
He mentioned that he usually competes in around 22 events per year, but moving forward, he plans to participate in only 18 to 20 events. Speaking about the 2025 PGA Tour schedule, McIlroy said (via Nuclr Golf):
"It's been a long season and I'm going to just have to think about trying to build in a few extra breaks here and there next year and going forward because I felt like I hit a bit of a wall sort of post-US Open and still feel a little bit of that hangover."
“I'm usually sort of like a 22 (events) sort of person. But again, that was when I was sort of in my 20s and didn't have the responsibilities that I do now. I'm going to try to cut it back to like 18 or 20 a year going forward, I think," he added.
However, as the four-time Major winner expressed his desire to play less in 2025, fans were quick to link him with LIV Golf. The Saudi-backed circuit is limited to 14 events per season, and with McIlroy wanting to play fewer events, fans speculated that he would probably make the switch to LIV Golf.
"He’s going to LIV," a fan commented.
Meanwhile, another fan highlighted the substantial signing bonuses LIV Golf offers its players.
"One billion incoming," a fan wrote.
"Join LIV. Problem solved and you can pick up a few hundred million while you’re at it," another fan wrote.
Another fan commented that McIlroy should join LIV Golf, as the breakaway series has three-day events, which means one less round compared to regular PGA Tour events. Additionally, LIV Golf has fewer events, and they offer prize money to all players in the field.
"Sounds like an LIV schedule would be better. One less day of playing each week. Less weeks. More money," a fan commented.
