Here's what to do and what not to at Augusta's The Masters for fans

The Masters - Preview Day 1
Rules at the Masters for fans to follow

The Masters is a bit of a destination for any golf fan. Visiting Augusta National is one thing, and it's a wonderful thing to do, but it's even better to visit and watch the best golfers in the world compete for golf's most prestigious trophy. Of the four majors, many hold Augusta's in the highest regard.

If fans do visit, there are a lot of rules they must follow. Naturally, this is one of the biggest sporting events of the year and it is anything but casual. What are the rules fans need to follow when visiting Augusta for the Masters?

Rules for Augusta during the Masters

No cell phones or anything like them

When in attendance for the tournament, there can be no cell phones, pagers, laptops, tablets or anything of the source. Fans must remain silent and present for the moment at all times. Fitness bands and watches are allowed.

Cameras are also prohibited. However, during practice days, they can have cameras and take pictures. On match days (Thursday through Sunday), they can't.

Items you can't bring

There is a lengthy list of items that patrons cannot bring into the grounds:

  • Bags, backpacks and purses larger than the approved size
  • Knives and weapons of any kind. Even with a permit, they're not allowed
  • Cameras except on practice rounds
  • Radios, TVs and any other music-making devices
  • Chairs and seats with pointed ends, folding armchairs and other rigid chairs
  • Flags, banners or signs
  • Baby strollers
  • Any outside food, beverages or coolers
  • Golfing shoes that have metal spikes
  • Ladders, selfie sticks and periscopes

The committee may also prohibit any item at their discretion.

Do not sell tickets at the Masters

At any sporting event, many fans will stand outside the stadium and try to sell tickets to the event. This is a way they can prey on those who hadn't gotten tickets yet and try to make a little money off the ticket prices.

However, this is not allowed at Augusta National. There's a 2,700 foot barrier to selling tickets. Anyone caught doing so within that boundary is subject to an arrest or a criminal charge.

Coming and going

If you have tickets, you had better stay on the grounds. Ticketholders can only enter the gates twice a day. If you have to leave to get something, you can come back to the event.

However, after that, you can't leave and come back again. You're done for the day if that happens.

Autographs

It's natural for fans to want to get someone's autograph. These are the world's best golfers and fan favorites. Nevertheless, autographs can only be requested in specified areas.

They can be asked for in areas adjacent to the Tournament Practice Area and on the Par 3 course during the Par 3 Contest, per the Masters official website.

For the most part, the rest of the rules are pretty par for the course. It's imperative to be on the best behavior as the groundstaff can remove any of the spectators, based on their behavior.
