Nelly Korda won The Chevron Championship on Sunday. The World No. 1 golfer registered her fifth consecutive win of the season, entering the record books. She became the third all-time female golfer to win five LPGA events in a row after Nancy Lopez (1978) and Annika Sorenstam (2004-05).
The 25-year-old, who hasn't lost a tournament since January, will compete in the JM Eagle LA Championship next week in Los Angeles. She notably stands a chance to be the first-ever golfer to win six straight events on the women’s circuit. While the odds for the record are in her favor, Korda said that she isn’t thinking much about it.
Commenting on the possibility of the record, the two-time Major champion said that she is currently “going to enjoy” her wins. However, Korda added that she “hopes to keep the streak alive.”
Speaking in the winner’s press conference at The Chevron Championship, Nelly Korda said (at 7:04):
“I’m going to enjoy this (winning streak) right now and then I’ll think about that. But yeah, it’s been an amazing time. Hopefully, keep the streak alive. But I’ve been so grateful to compete week in and week out and get the five in a row, too.”
Further, Nelly Korda dubbed it ‘amazing’ to win five in a row. Korda also stated that winning a Major championship in the run feels even better.
She said (at 5:08):
“It’s been an amazing feeling these past couple weeks knowing that I can go on this stretch and that if I stay in my bubble and I keep golf in a sense simple and let it flow, then I can have so, so much fun out here.
"And it's just been an amazing time and to get five in a row and for me to get it here in Houston, and it to be a Major, feels even better."
Nelly Korda's wins so far
It is pertinent to note that Nelly Korda had a moderate start to the season. The 25-year-old golfer teed off her 2024 schedule with a T16 finish at the Hilton Grand Vacations Tournament of Champions. Lydia Ko won the event. Interestingly, Korda hasn’t lost an event since.
Korda won the LPGA Drive On Championship in January, followed it up with wins at Fir Hills Seri Pak Championship, Ford Championship presented by KCC and T-Mobile Match Play presented by MGM Rewards. Korda shot a 3-under 69 at The Chevron Championship on Sunday. She beat Maja Stark of Sweden at Carlton Woods to take her fifth win in a row.
Notably, Korda also doubled her season earnings with the win at The Chevron Championship. The LPGA star bagged $1,200,000 for winning the Major. She had amassed a similar sum with her previous four wins. Added to the $24,216, she made at the LPGA season opener, Korda has bagged $2,424,216 since the start of the season.
