Collin Morikawa has come close to victory several times in the 2024 season. In more than one of those tournaments, Morikawa has lost to Scottie Scheffler, but the former is confident that he has a chance to win the majors.
Scheffler is on one of the best streaks in recent times in world golf, which is why Morikawa praised him after his victory in the Memorial Tournament. However, Morikawa also showed that he is already focused on the upcoming US Open.
This was part of what Collin Morikawa had to say after his second place finish at the Memorial Tournament (via Sports Illustrated):
"Scottie [Scheffler]'s obviously proven himself this year and the past, let's call it three, three-and-a-half years of what he's capable of doing, but majors are majors."
He added:
"You got to show up and you got to have the good bounces, especially I think (this) week, a lot of the sand dunes and the bushes around, like, things got to go your way and then hopefully [this] week is one of my good ones."
Scottie Scheffler won the 2024 Memorial Tournament with a score of 8 under, one stroke ahead of Collin Morikawa. However, the final round was a fierce battle, in which Morikawa started four strokes behind, but came within one after making birdie on the 12th hole.
The round was all but decided on the 16th hole, where Morikawa missed a 22-foot putt for par and carded bogey. On that same hole, Scheffler holed a 15-foot, 9-inch putt for par that kept the lead at two strokes.
Scheffler then bogeyed the 17th and parred the 18th to win by one stroke. Morikawa could have forced a playoff with a birdie on one of the final two holes, but missed a hole-out attempt 42 feet from the hole on the 17th. He also failed to find the green with his second shot on the 18th, saving only par on both holes.
Morikawa has come close to victory several times in 2024
Collin Morikawa's most recent PGA Tour victory was the ZOZO Championship in Japan in late 2023. However, in 2024 as well, he has been in contention in several events, including the first two majors of the season.
In the 12 tournaments that Morikawa has participated in this year, he placed in six Top 10s (10 cuts passed). At the Masters Tournament, he was in contention for the title until the very last moment, and even played in the final group with eventual champion, Scottie Scheffler.
Something similar happened at the PGA Championship, where he once again played in the final group with the eventual champion, Xander Schauffele. More recently, at the Charles Schwab Challenge, he was also among the top contenders, eventually finishing fourth.
