The 2024 Open Championship is just around the corner. The 152nd edition of the tournament is scheduled at Royal Troon Golf Club in Troon, South Ayrshire, Scotland, from July 18 to 21, 2024.
Twelve amateurs from nine countries will compete in the field of 156 players. Five of the amateurs made it to the field through final qualifying while the remaining seven earned their spot through eight exemptions given below:
- The Amateur winner 2024
- The U.S. Amateur winner 2023
- The European Amateur winner 2024
- The Mark H McCormack Medal (men’s world amateur ranking) winner 2023
- The Asia-Pacific Amateur winner 2023
- The Latin America Amateur winner 2024
- The Open Amateur Series winner 2024
- The Africa Amateur winner 2024
No one qualified through the exemption of US Amateur 2023 as Nick Dunlap, who won the competition, turned professional earlier this year.

12 amateurs competing in the 2024 Open Championship
#1 Matthew Dodd-Berry (England)
Matthew Dodd-Berry qualified for the 2024 Open Championship through the final qualifying event at Liverpool's West Lancashire Golf Club. With four positions available, the England native tied for the first position with a score of 6-under par. He shot a 69 in the first round and a 69 in the second.
#2 Dominic Clemons (England)
Dominic Clemons qualified for the tournament through the final qualifying event at Burnham & Berrow. With four positions available, Clemons tied for the first position with a score of 8-under 136 in 36 holes. He shot a 66 in the first round and a 68 in the second.
#3 Liam Nolan (Ireland)
Liam Nolan qualified for the final Major of 2024 through the final qualifying event at Dundonald Links. With four positions available, Nolan tied for the second position with a score of 5-under 139 in 36 holes. He shot a 69 in the first round and a 70 in the second.
#4 Jaime Montojo Fernandez (Spain)
Jaime Montojo Fernandez qualified for the tournament through the final qualifying event at Royal Cinque Ports. With four positions available, Fernandez tied for the second position with a score of 3-under 141 in two rounds. He shot a 71 in the first round and a 70 in the second.
#5 Luis Masaveu (Spain)
Luis Masaveu also qualified for Royal Troon through the final qualifying at Royal Cinque Ports. However, qualifying for Masaveu was tricky as he won the 3-for-1 playoff against Jamie Rutherford and Branden Grace after they all tied for the fourth position.
#6 Calum Scott (Scotland)
Calum Scott has qualified for the 2024 Open Championship after being the winner of the Open Amateur Series winner. The Open Amateur series, which was introduced last year, consists of three amateur tournaments:
- The St Andrews Links Trophy
- The Amateur Championship
- The European Amateur Championship
The player who earns the most WAGR points in all three events qualifies for Royal Troon.
#7 Jacob Skov Olesen (Denmark)
Jacob Skov Olesen earned his exemption after winning the Amateur Championship 2024. He became the first Danish player to win the amateur competition. Olesen won against England's Dominic Clemons at Ballyliffin.
#8 Tommy Morrison (United States)
Tommy Morrison became the first American to win the 2024 European Amateur Championship. The University of Texas player won in playoffs with Ireland’s Max Kennedy and Germany’s Tim Wiedemeyer.
#9 Santiago De La Fuente (Mexico)
Santiago De La Fuente earned his spot at the 2024 Open Championship by winning the Latin America Amateur Championship at Santa Maria Golf Club in Panama. Fuente got the better of Mexico's Omar Morales by two shots.
#10 Jasper Stubbs (Australia)
Jasper Stubbs won the Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship 2023 in playoffs against China’s Wenyi Ding and Sampson-Yunhe Zheng. He has also won the New Zealand Amateur competition.
#11 Altin van der Merwe (South Africa)
Altin van der Merwe won the Africa Amateur Championship 2024 on the first extra hole in playoffs by a birdie against Christiaan Maas and Ivan Verster.
#12 Gordon Sargent (United States)
Gordon Sargent is currently ranked No. 1 in the men’s world amateur rankings (WAGR). He won the Mark H McCormack Medal for being the top amateur in 2023 and earned the spot at 2024 Open Championship. Recently, he represented the United States in the Arnold Palmer Cup and helped them win the tournament.
