Michael Block's OWGR ranking received a huge boost after the club pro's exceptional performance at the PGA Championship. Block is a golf instructor by trade but got the opportunity to play in the Major and he did not disappoint.
Block sank a hole in one as part of a stunning T15 finish. He shot one over par but took the world by storm over the weekend.
As a result, his OWGR ranking soared. Prior to the Major tournament, Block was ranked at World No. 3580. After a thrilling weekend, his ranking has skyrocketed to World No. 577 after the update on Monday.
Block's T15 finish earned him an incredible 3,003-place jump in the rankings. It was the best finish by a club pro at the Major since 1986.
After the tournament, Block told Golf Channel that he's not really interested in playing on the tour:
“No, I don’t want to play any tours. I just want to come out and compete when I’m around and then go back to my club and hang out with my family.”
He also stated that it was a vintage 'Blocky' performance from him on the biggest stage:
“Blocky golf, hit fairways, hit little baby cuts out there. Putted how I normally do. The greens were perfect here. So the hole looks huge to me.”
Block's performance has left fans wanting more of the 46-year-old sensation. He has received an invitation for this weekend's Charles Schwab Challenge.
New OWGR number one Scottie Scheffler reflects on T2 finish
Scottie Scheffler entered the PGA Championship as one of the favorites for the title but had to settle for a T2 finish behind LIV Golfer Brooks Koepka. However, he has climbed to the top of the OWGR rankings after Jon Rahm's disappointing weekend.
Scheffler was indifferent when asked about his return to the World No. 1 position. He said (via Yahoo Sports):
“That's great. I mean, it's just an algorithm. It's nice, but I really don't care.”
Scheffler was disappointed about two lip-outs that he screwed up. He said:
"I probably think about the two shots. I can tell you right now, I had two of the worst lip-outs I have ever seen on number one and number nine today. Balls were trickling and I was ready to take a step like they went in... Outside of that, I mean I played solid golf most of the week. In order to win these tournaments, the putt's gotta fall in. I had a lot of good putts this week, they just didn't fall."
Scottie Scheffler will be the favorite heading into the Charles Schwab Challenge.
