Miles Russell had a rough start at the 2024 Rocket Mortgage Classic, shooting 2-over 74 to start his journey on the PGA Tour. The 15-year-old amateur golfer earned a spot at the event on a sponsor exemption. However, his debut was not smooth.

Miles Russell teed off on the tenth hole of Detroit Golf Club on Thursday, June 27. He began with a bogey on the tenth hole and made par on the rest of the holes on his first nine. On the back nine, he found some relief by carding a birdie on the third hole, his 12th of the round.

Unfortunately, this happiness was short-lived, as he struggled with a double bogey on the sixth hole, followed by a birdie on the seventh. He then carded another bogey on the ninth hole to finish with a score of 2-over par 74.

Miles Russell settled into a tie for 128th place on the leaderboard after the first round. He is on the verge of missing the cut in his debut event. At the time of writing, the PGA Tour golfers have also started their second round, with the projected cutline at -2. Russell is playing five strokes below the cutline.

Meanwhile, Akshay Bhatia was impressive in the opening round of the Rocket Mortgage Classic, carding a splendid 8-under 64 to take the lead by one stroke over Taylor Montgomery and Michael Kim.

"We live, we learn, we move on"- Miles Russell is optimistic about his game despite having a rough start at the 2024 Rocket Mortgage Classic

Miles Russell is optimistic about his game despite having a rough start in his debut event on the PGA Tour. He enjoys playing with professionals and looks forward to learning from the tournament.

During an interview with the media after the first round of the Rocket Mortgage Classic, Russell opened up about his game and said (via PGA Tour):

“Today was a great day. I mean, for it to be the first, definitely wasn't quite what I was hoping for, but we live, we learn, we move on. Looking forward to tomorrow and hopefully tomorrow's going to be better.”

For the tournament's first round, Russell was paired with Pierceson Coody and Rico Hoey. He was happy to play with them and reflected on his game following the event. He said (via PGA Tour):

“I learned a lot. Especially when you don't play your best, but then watch Pierceson (Coody) and Rico (Hoey), I mean, they grind it out and they shot a couple under. It's like that could have very easily been what I did, just didn't quite make enough putts and made a few unforced errors.”

The 2024 Rocket Mortgage Classic is a regular PGA Tour event with a full-size field. The tournament has a cutline after 36 holes and will conclude on Sunday, June 30.
