On Saturday, August 10, Lydia Ko carded a 1-under 71 to win the gold medal at the 2024 Olympics. She aggregated at 10-under, beating Esther Henseleit of Germany by two strokes. Xiyu Lin won silver after shooting 7-under over the four rounds.
Unlike the usual LPGA Tour events, the 2024 Olympics didn't offer any prize money to the players. However, many countries gave monetary incentives to their medalists. A few years ago, New Zealand was among the four nations that didn't offer any incentives to their players. However, since the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, it has offered $36,118 to the gold medalists.
As per Forbes, Hong Kong tops the list of highest monetary bonuses, offering nearly $768,000 to the gold medalist. Besides, silver medalists get $384,000, while bronze medalists earn $192,000. Singapore also offers a lot of money to the Olympic winners, offering $745,000 to gold medalists.
"It doesn't get better than this" Lydia Ko reflects on win at 2024 Paris Olympics
Following her win at the Paris Olympics, Lydia Ko reflected on her performance. Ko said that in her younger days, she would have been under pressure going into the final round with a two-stroke lead. However, now she was much more relaxed in this situation. She said:
"I tried to think of, hey, like I get two free shots over some of the other players, and you know, they don't come for free. I wanted to have that as a cushion, but also focus on my game."
Lydia Ko added that she was proud of sticking to her game plan of being aggressive with the tee.
"That's been something that I've been struggling with and been working really hard with on with my coaches. And for to progressively get better these past couple months and for it to hits peak here at the Olympics, it doesn't get better than this. To be holding and wearing this Gold Medal, it's pretty crazy right now," she added.
The 20-time LPGA Tour winner will now be in action at the Women's Open, set to be played at the Old Course in the UK from August 22 to August 25. She has won one title this season, apart from competing in the Paris Olympics, and will now look to continue her good run for the remainder of the season.
