The Open Championship prize money breakdown

As mentioned above, the 152nd Open Championship at Royal Troon will have a revised prize purse. The R&A on Monday announced that the champion golfer will bag a whopping $3,100,000 in prize money from the event’s $17,000,000 purse. This will be the highest prize money amount in Open history.

The player finishing runner-up on The Open Championship leaderboard will bag $1,759,000, while the third-placed golfer will take home $1,128,000. Competitors finishing solo 32 and better shall earn six figures, with the 32nd-placed player taking $102,100.

It is pertinent to note that the major championship has the traditional 36-hole cut. Owing to this, only the top 70 golfers and ties will win prize money paychecks after the final round. Additional prize money will be added to the mix if more than 70 professional golfers make the Friday cut and qualify for the final two rounds.

Much like the Masters and the US Open, golfers who fail to make the 36-hole cut will also get some compensation. Players finishing top 10 from below the cut line will receive $12,350, while the next 20 golfers and ties get $10,300. The remaining players will fly home with $8,750 each.

Notably, prize money shall be allocated only to professional golfers, not amateurs.
