"I didn't have any expectations"- Ryggs Johnston opens up about his challenging journey to win the Australian Open

Ryggs Johnston won the 2024 Australian Open by three strokes as he remained -18 for the event. In the post-round interview, the American golfer opened up about the struggles he faced before winning the Australian Open.

In the interview, the host questioned Johnston if he expected to register a win this week. In response, the golfer disclosed that he didn't have high hopes going into the tournament.

"To be honest, probably not," Johnston said. "I mean, I turned up pretty tired already from all the travel and Q school and everything. Didn't get a practice round here with the weather, so I didn't really have any expectations, which probably helped me. In the end, I wasn't given."

Further, he said that getting the DP World Tour card was a 'great' feeling.

"It feels great. I mean, just knowing that you know more playing opportunities and getting into bigger events. It hasn't quite sunk in yet, but it's, it's an amazing feeling," the 24-year-old golfer said.

Ryggs Johnston then detailed his experience of playing at the 2024 Australian Open, highlighting the crowd support:

"It's great. I've heard the Australians love this place, and they turned out, and it was amazing. The crowds were big, and they were great. They were also supportive, so it was a lot of fun," the 2024 Australian Open champion said (at 1:37).

Ryggs Johnston maintained his position as an overnight leader on the final day. He carded five birdies, two bogeys, and an eagle on the first hole at Kingston Heath to win the event by four strokes.
