"I just started pretty good” – Tiger topples World No. 2 at the 2024 US Amateur

Tiger Christensen has advanced to the Round of 32 at the 2024 US Amateur on Wednesday, August 14. The tournament is being held at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minnesota.

Christensen defeated Gordon Sargent by 4 and 3. Christensen is ranked 51st in the World Amateur Golf Rankings while Sargent is ranked second. Christensen started the round with three birdies and was 3 up in three holes. Talking about his perfomance, he said (via Golfweek):

"I just started pretty good. Obviously, a birdie on 1 feels pretty good to start off with, but then I had a good tee shot on 2 and just kind of kept it going. It was definitely a good start to have, but I think it was just a good match."

Christensen hails from Germany while Sargent hails from Birmingham, Alaska. Both have played against each other on multiple occasions. Christensen said:

"We played a bunch in college, and I played with him at the World Am. I've played a major too now. So you see each other week in and week out. It's not that crazy as it might seem from the outside. It definitely was cool. I respect him a lot. I think he’s one of the great players we have as an amateur. Yeah, it was definitely a lot of fun."

Gordon Sargent has lost in the Round of 64 at the US Amateur for the fourth time this year. He never took the lead against Christensen. Christensen will now face Jose Luis Ballester of Spain in the Round of 32 at US Amateur at 9:30 AM CDT.
