Collin Morikawa shared his thoughts on the potential format change for the Tour Championship, expressing that he didn’t mind the current setup and believed it was better than the proposed alternative.
Morikawa is currently in Kapalua for the Sentry 2025, the opening event of the PGA Tour season. Recently, The New York Times reported that the PGA Tour is considering altering the Tour Championship format, potentially introducing a bracket-style system with head-to-head play.
On Friday, January 4, Collin Morikawa discussed the proposed changes and stated he was content with the current format, even though some players have expressed concerns about it.
"I think it plays out to, you know, you could have a really good season like Scottie did and win it or not win it, right, as we have seen the past couple years," he added. "I did hear about it briefly, I kind of read up on it, I don't have New York Times so it kind of scrolled me out after the first paragraph."
"I do, I know the concept of what was brought up, I don't know how deep it's gone through the Tour and how true it is. I think there's a better way than what I saw or what I've heard, but you know.
When asked about an alternative, the two-time Major champion admitted he didn’t have one. However, he added that the premier tournament could be conducted in a better format than the proposed bracket-style system.
"I think there's a better way to play it out than what I heard. But I don't know what's set in stone or not. Whatever it is you just got to live with it," he added.
"Golf is too hard" - Collin Morikawa reflects on the proposed format change for the Tour Championship
Collin Morikawa added that it wasn't possible to have a perfect format in golf.
"Golf is too hard," he continued. "Golf is normally played over four rounds, it's hard to play, you know, one versus one and say you're the better player, because day by day it's not about just today, it's not about just tomorrow, it's an accumulation of your four rounds.
"But when you put together a season, it's tough, because you can say one season was better than another just because of one tournament that all comes down to, right."
Under the current format, players are given a stroke advantage based on their position after the two playoff events leading up to the Tour Championship. It will be interesting to see what changes the PGA Tour might introduce.
As for Collin Morikawa, he is currently in the solo second place after the two rounds of play at the Sentry 2025. He carded 8-under 65 in the second round to aggregate at 15-under, one stroke behind Hideki Matsuyama.
