Charley Hull was spotted sporting aviators on the 18th hole during the first round of the AIG Women's Open. Ideally, sunglasses are worn when the light is bright, but she had a different reason for wearing them in the evening.
On Thursday, August 22, Hull fired a 5-under 67 at the AIG Women's Open to take an early one-stroke lead. She made six birdies in her round while bogeying just one hole.
During the post-round interview, Hull was asked if she wore the sunglasses on the 18th at St. Andrews for some 'effect.'
"No, I wear them because my eyes when the wind is blowing," she replied. "I know it sounds silly, but my nose and my eyes just water all the time, so whenever I put my glasses on, it stops them watering.
"So even though it's not sunny, it may look silly, but that's the reason why. I was thinking, people must think I'm like a right idiot, but no, it's because they were stopping the wind."
Speaking of her round, Charley Hull was satisfied with her score given the windy conditions on Thursday at St. Anderes. She added:
"Actually, before my round I was in there watching it on the TV when I saw the scores, and I thought, how is she 4-under par; that was an unbelievable score. I'd take that now because it was gusting a lot on the range, and I said to my coach, 'feels like they could call it at any minute because I don't know how the balls are staying on the greens.'
