Irish golfer Shane Lowry was frozen out by a cold putter. However, he secured his first top-10 finish of the 2023 season at the recently concluded Honda Classic.
He was four shots behind winner Chris Kirk on the PGA National's Champion Course. A level par 70 left Shane Lowry in a five-way tie for fifth on nine-under par. Lowry picked up a $200k prize money.
He was wearing a green and white ribbon on his hat as a tribute to his uncle, who passed away unexpectedly last week. He even said that he wanted to make him proud. And without a doubt he did. Lowry talked about his performance at the Honda Classic:
"I played lovely, and I just couldn't get it going. I started to get uncomfortable on the greens early on, and that was the way it was the whole day. Disappointing, but I had a lot of positives to take from this week."
However, he chose to look at the positives.
"I have to look at the positives. Obviously, I didn't get the job done today. I just never got it going. I hit the ball well enough to get into contention but just didn't hole the putts."
Shane Lowry's putter was cold early in the week, but while he gradually found his range in the final round to give himself a chance, he was unable to capitalize on his best ball-striking round of the week.
After falling four shots behind overnight, he quickly fell six shots behind when he bogeyed the first and Chris Kirk made a birdie in the match behind.
Lowry minimized the gap after Kirk bogeyed the second with a 252-yard approach to 20 feet at the third and two-putted for birdie. Lowry made a six-footer for par in the fifth, but it turned out to be his longest putt of the day.
"My golf game is in a place where I'm happy with it" - Shane Lowry
Shane Lowry moved from 130th to 89th place in the FedEx Cup. He believed that his game was at a point where he was happy with it. He said:
"Some nice FedExCup points. My golf game is in a place where I'm happy with it. I'm going into a nice stretch of - a nice part of the season."
He hoped to build on this performance for the rest of the season.
"After my week in Phoenix, I was a little bit lost, and you're standing there, and I was 180th or something in the FedExCup," Lowry added. "You're like, I need to make some FedExCup points soon. I've had two nice weeks, and hopefully, I can build on this going forward now."
Shane Lowry will look to build on his outing at the Honda Classic and perform even better in the upcoming tournaments.
