On Sunday, Mat Kuchar posted a 4-under 68 to finish third at the Valero Texas Open at TPC San Antonio. However, on the final hole of the day, Kuchar's drive hit a fan. After the conclusion of the match, Kuchar visited the fan and apologized to him:
"Apologies. I hope you're okay."
Kuchar also gifted him a signed glove as a gesture that made his day.
"'I made sure it got the right bounce'🤣, Matt Kuchar's ball hit this fan on No. 18 @ValeroTXOpen, but he got a signed glove in return."
Golf Twitter had some interesting things to say about the incident. Here are a few of the reactions:
"Did he charge him for it?"
"I bet there wasn't any money in it..."
"More then he gave his caddy today"
Ironically, he pays his caddy with signed golf gloves too
"Probably a sponsors glove ... #freebie"
"NO Question of the fan even bothering to check inside the glove for 💵 Kuchar straight on the phone post round to the kit provider for another spare"
"He would have stiffed the guy the glove if the camera wasn’t right there…"
"I just love Matt Kuchar. He’s so competitive and at the same time one of best spirited persons on the course."
"That was cool thing to do 🤙"
"He doesn’t pay for gloves that’s why he gave it away"
Matt Kuchar finishes for tied third place at Valero Texas Open
Matt Kuchar carded a score of 4-under 68 on Sunday with the help of five birdies and a bogey, ending up in a tie for third place with Sam Ryder. Ryder shot a fourth round of 6-under 66 for a T-3 finish.
Corey Conners of Canada emerged victorious at the TPC San Antonio after shooting a bogey-free final round of 4-under 68. After four rounds of golf, Conners aggregated at 15-under 273, beating rookie Sam Stevens by a single-stroke margin.
It was Conners' second title in five years at the TPC San Antonio, his only two PGA Tour victories.
Stevens tried his best on the final day with an impressive 6-under 66 on Sunday that included two eagles and five birdies, but the three bogeys cost him the title.
Patrick Rodgers was leading after three rounds but a poor 1-over 73 ended his chances for a maiden Tour victory.
“Yeah, disappointing day," Rodgers told PGA Tour. “I feel like I made some good swings that kind of the wind got or they landed a few yards in the wrong spots and it ended up costing me bogeys. That was my day today.”
The fifth-place finish at the Valero Texas Open meant he failed to earn a spot at the 2023 Masters that begins on Thursday, April 6.
