The 2024 Presidents Cup had just begun and a new controversy has already brewed. The said controversy happened during round 1's fourball fixtures at the Royal Montreal Golf Club.
International team's Tom Kim and Sungjae Im went against US team's Scottie Scheffler and Russel Henley in the fourball event. During the 8th hole, Kim and Im walked 60 yards away to the 9th hole before Scheffler could finish putting. Paul McGinley found this behavior disrespectful. He said (via NUCLR GOLF):
"That's bordering on bad behavior. That's disrespectful in my opinion. I know it's competitive out there, but this certainly shows you there is an underlying edge here that it's not all fun and games,"
However, the actions have attracted mixed reactions from fans across the world, with some fans agreeing with McGinley.
"Yes, watching. Agreed a bit bratty" one fan said.
Most fans believed that blowing this controversy was a way to create different storylines. One of the comments read:
"They’re trying so hard to create a storyline and make this thing watchable. It’s almost working."
"Tommy and Scottie are literally bff's, this is clickbait." another fan stated.
Some fans pointed out Scottie Scheffler's brush with criminal charges at the 2024 PGA Championship in Kentucky in May. He was arrested for second-degree assault on a police officer, third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving, and disregarding traffic signals. All charges were dropped in a few days because the evidence did not support the charges.
However, now it appears that the incident hasn't been erased from the public mind. While some pointed it out, others drew sarcastic remarks.
"I mean he is a convicted felon," a fan wrote.
"Scottie is a criminal. He's done time. Tom better be careful." one fan joked.
"Prison shank from Scottie. Watch out!" another added.
Despite whatever controversy seemed to be cooking, later Scheffler and Russell Henley were seen laughing the situation off.
Which two players from LIV Golf does Scottie Scheffler miss?
The rivalry between LIV Golf and the PGA Tour also led to a division between the golfers and it's obvious for them to miss one another, especially at special moments such as the Presidents Cup or the Ryder Cup.
World no. 1 Scottie Scheffler is one of the key players in the US team at this year's Presidents Cup at the Royal Montreal in Quebec, Canada. He recently revealed that he misses playing against a few players. This list also included two of his iconic compatriots who defected to LIV Golf. They are Brooks Koepka and Bryson DeChambeau.
Scheffler said (via Mirror):
"Brooks has five major championships -- five, six? Five. That's a pretty cool record for him. He's had a great career. He's a guy I love competing against,"
Scheffler further added:
"You've got Bryson, with all his stuff, I think he's a fun guy to be around. It definitely interested me, and the way things fell together, it seemed to work out nice.It seems like a fun deal,"
The 28-year-old had often been paired with them while representing their country at the biennial events. Scheffler further said that he also missed playing against Northern Irish golfer Rory McIlroy:
"I've partnered with Brooks and Bryson at Ryder Cups before. I've never obviously had a chance to play with Rory at the Ryder Cup, but those are two guys I really miss competing against,"
The Presidents Cup will wrap up on Sept. 29, 2024.
