Though Nelly Korda did play very well over the weekend, it did not yield a win at the AIG Women's Open. The final Major came and went and left Korda without a trophy and with a T2 placement. She was just two strokes behind the lead when the final ball was putted on Sunday evening.
After the event, she spoke with the press and opened up on the close loss via ASAP Sports:
"Listen, it's golf. I'm going to mess up and unfortunately, I messed up over the weekend twice in two penalising ways coming down the stretch. Theoretically, that's what kind of cost me the tournament but I played well. I played solid. I even fought after that. I'm going to take that into the next coming events."
She also said that she'd been working on her putts, and that it ultimately paid off. In her own words, Korda putted "really well" and said that it will be interesting to see where her overall game is when she's not driving into 30-mile-per-hour or stronger winds.
Nelly Korda opens up on two crucial holes at AIG Women's Open
A few key mistakes, such as a double bogey on the 15th, ended up costing Nelly Korda the win. At one point, she led and looked poised to cruise down the stretch and win another Major this year. That didn't happen thanks to the 15th and 17th holes.
Nelly Korda said via ASAP Sports:
"The double, I had 58-degree and it just shot on me. The wedge shot that I had over the green was kind of sitting a little bit in a hole with some of the whatever you call it, the 'hay' or whatever you call it behind it. I just can't catch it cleanly and then obviously didn't make the putt for bogey."
The 17th hole proved to be difficult, too, as she left her putt short and cost herself on the scoreboard. She said she had a hit right of it, but Korda was a little too close to the back edge. It was one she thought she could get to the top of the bunker, but she didn't:
"Instead of doing that, I took my medicine and went a little right. Hit the putt really good but just didn't have enough speed."
In such a close loss in one of golf's biggest competitions, such misfires loom large, but there was an entire weekend of golf that led to Lydia Ko's victory and Korda's T2 alongside Ruoning Yin, Shin Ji-Yai, and Lilia Vu.
It was still her best Major performance in a while, as she placed tied for 26th at the Evian Championship and missed the cut at the Women's US Open and Women's PGA Championship.
