Nick Dunlap said it was a "pinch me" moment for him every day he was on the Tour. He made this statement after the third round of the FedEx St. Jude Championship, as he remains in contention for the third title of his career.
On Saturday, August 17, Dunlap shot a 4-under 66 in the third round of the FedEx St. Jude Championship, bringing his total to 12-under. After 54 holes, he is in second place, five strokes behind Hideki Matsuyama.
This time last year, Dunlap was competing in the U.S. Amateur, which he eventually won. Since then, a lot has happened. Earlier this year, he won the American Express as an amateur, turned pro after the win, and then won the Barracuda Championship heading into the playoffs. Now, he is placed second at Memphis, his first-ever FedEx Cup playoff event.
"It’s definitely pinch-me almost every week,” Dunlap said, as per Golf Digest. "I mean, I should be playing the U.S. Am this week, and I just got done playing a round of golf with Scottie [Scheffler]. It was pretty cool."
"I absolutely thought I’d be playing in the U.S. Amateur this week," he added. "If I don’t win the AmEx, I’m not going to be out here. I wouldn't have status. So, it’s all still a pretty big surprise, even now. This year has been unbelievable. I’ve learned a ton."
The PGA Tour rookie has jumped from 67th to 12th in the FedEx Cup standings and will now compete at the BMW Championship next week.
