Aberg scored a 6-under 64 in the first round of the tournament. However, he faced a cruel setback on the eighth hole after his ball landed on top of his playing partner Collin Morikawa's ball and then shot off sideways.

Talking about the eighth hole shot, Aberg said (via Ten Golf):

"I felt like I hit a good shot. It was probably going to be 12, 15 feet, something like that where Colin was. You can't see the bottom of the flagstick from the fairway. We just saw the ball just shoot off to the right. I didn't really realise what it hit. I've never seen it before. I'm probably not going to see it for a long time again, but it's just one of them." Aberg scored a bogey on the eighth hole. He scored three birdies on the 3rd, 6th and 7th holes and another bogey on the 5th on the front nine. On the back nine, he scored three birdies on the 10th, 12th and 17th holes and an eagle on the 16th.

Talking about his round, Ludvig Aberg said:

"I think what made me the most pleased was off the tee. The last couple of days I've been working on a few things and it's nice to see that I can do it. It was good and obviously I felt like I gave myself a lot of chances, especially back nine. It's nice to see a few go in as well towards the end."

Justin Thomas sits on the top of the leaderboard and is two shots ahead of Aberg with a score of 8-under 62. He is followed by Sungjae Im with a score of 7-under 63.
