Ian Poulter appeared on the short game coach Dan Grieve's YouTube Channel a couple of months ago in August. The two golfers discussed various tips and tricks regarding the short game and also talked about Poulter's incredible performance at the 2012 Ryder Cup.
The Brit's LIV Golf team, Majestic GC, posted a clip on Saturday (October 12) where he appreciated and explained why his fellow LIV Golfer Phil Mickelson is the best short game golfer of his generation.
"There's not many players in the world that I've seen that's been unbelievably good with the 64. I can think of one, Phil," Poulter said.
"But he's on his own when we're talking short game. I played with him two weeks ago, and his bunker play with a lob wedge is absolutely phenomenal. It looks like he's going to hole it every time," Poulter revealed.
The host questioned if he considers Mickelson the best short-game golfer of his generation. The 48-year-old replied positively and said the left-handed golfer is by far the best, and there is a lot to learn from him.
"By far, over a long period of time that I've had multiple rounds with over a 25-year period. He is someone that you can learn a lot from, but he does it his way."
Ian Poulter then revealed an anecdote to explain the level of Phil Mickelson's short game.
"I've seen him on a short game area like this, and I've seen him hit shots, and it's a 30-yard shot off of a reasonably tight lie, and I've seen it pitching past the pin and sucking it back five feet.
The Majestic GC co-skipper said he went to the same spot and tried but couldn't replicate the shot.
"I've gone in there myself. And you just, you just can't do it, yeah, I mean, it's just it's he is unbelievably talented and has incredible hands," Poulter concluded.
Ian Poulter reveals his other favorite short-game players
After high praise for Phil Mickelson's short game skills, Ian Poulter, during his interview, revealed his other favorite short game golfers to watch (from 25:39 to 27:43).
The British golfer said that there are several golfers that he would put in a bracket of fun short game players to watch. He included three Australians in this list and named Cameron Smith, Jason Day, and Brett Rumford. He then explained their technicalities and revealed why he loves and admires watching their short game.
To conclude, the 48-year-old golfer said he loves watching old videotapes of Seve Ballesteros. Poulter revealed he played with the legendary golfer several times, including Ballesteros' last Open Championship.
