The DP World Championship is this weekend. 50 of the world's best golfers will compete for the top trophy the DP World Tour has to offer. The field will be determined by the Race to Dubai Rankings. Since the field is so limited, it's worth figuring out if there's a cut.
There is no cut in this event. It functions the exact same way to the PGA Tour's Tour Championship. There are two playoff events that shave the field down leading into that. For the DP World Championship, there's one.
The Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship last weekend had 70 golfers. After it, the top 50 moved to the championship. On the PGA Tour, it starts at 70 for the FedEx St. Jude Championship. 50 move on to the BMW Championship, with 30 then playing the Tour Championship.
Since there are so few players and the previous event functioned as a pseudo-cut, there is no need to cut the field down even further after the first two rounds.
Why isn't Jon Rahm playing in the DP World Championship?
Jon Rahm has won the DP World Championship three times in his illustrious golf career. He will not take the opportunity for a fourth this weekend, even though he is eligible to compete. He won the event in 2017, 2019, and 2022.
Rahm has not stated why, but his wife just gave birth to their third child recently, and Golf Monthly reported that the pregnancy was rather difficult.
The reason the Spaniard didn't take time off sooner is he was trying to qualify and maintain eligibility for the Ryder Cup. By playing four quick tournaments, including one on home soil, Rahm solidified his membership with the DP World Tour despite his LIV Golf status.
Those who play on Team Europe must retain their membership, and to do so, golfers must play four DP tournaments if one is on home soil. If one is not, they have to play six.
Rahm's absence leaves room for one more player outside the Race to Dubai top 50. Ludvig Aberg is also not playing, so up to the 52nd-ranked golfer will be in the field this weekend.
Rahm is the only three-time champion in this event's history, but he will have to wait until 2025 at the very least for another opportunity to create even more history.
Fellow LIV golfers Tyrrell Hatton, Joaquin Niemann, and Adrian Meronk are in the field this weekend. Hatton is Rahm's Legion XIII teammate and has been with him on the journey to qualify for the Ryder Cup over the last couple of months.
The golfer may make his return to action next week at the RSM Classic. He is the defending champion in that event. Additionally, his name is listed in the field for December's Hero World Challenge.
