The legendary LPGA Tour golfer Annika Sorenstam praised Caitlin Clark, who has taken the WNBA by storm. The 22-year-old basketball player is all set to compete in The Annika Driven by Gainbridge Pelican pro-am on November 13th.
The Annika Driven by Gainbridge at Pelican is one of the newest tournaments on the LPGA Tour. The tournament started in 2020, with Sei Young Kim emerging as the winner in the inaugural edition. Nelly Korda won this event twice in 2021 and 2022, while Lilia Vu won it last year.
During the media day of the event, the host of the upcoming LPGA Tour event, Annika Sorenstam, heaped praise on Caitlin Clark and said:
"We got Caitlin Clark coming, which, of course, was an internet success. What she has done is amazing for women's basketball but also women's sports, young girls, and women in general," Sorenstam said.
Further hoping that Clark's participation could drive in more coverage for the tournament, Sorenstam said:
"For her to come out here, it's awesome that she plays golf. She really has an interest. I think it's going to draw a lot of attention and then get some of those IndyCar drivers out there," the Swedish pro golfer said.
This will be Caitlin Clark's second pro-am event, as she competed in the John Deer Classic pro-am with Zach Johnson last year.
Annika Sorenstam on Caitlin Clark's influence: "She's an ambassador for women and sport"
During the same press conference, Annika Sorenstam claimed that Caitlin Clark was an 'ambassador for women and sports', citing the young WNBA player's influence in the sport.
"She's an ambassador for women and sport. She seems very athletic. I'm sure she can do anything she puts her mind to. But I do know she's playing quite a bit of golf growing up, and I believe it's one of her passions when she's not on the court making three-pointers," Annika said.
Further expressing excitement about Clark's participation in the pro-am tournament, Sorenstam said the 22-year-old's involvement in the sport could help introduce it to a wider range of audience.
"When you get somebody like Caitlin Clark to come, she brings another demographic. Obviously, young girls, but also, there's a lot of men talking about her coming. They want to see her because she's just athletic. I think that it just shows you that golf is for everyone, and I think it brings more attention to the tournament."
The field for the fifth edition of Annika Driven features prominent names like Nelly Korda, Charley Hull, Lydia Ko, and Lexi Thompson, among others, and is the second last event before the season finale.
