Jon Rahm has committed to compete in three DP World Tour events in the upcoming months to remain eligible for the Ryder Cup next year. The Spanish golfer said he wants to compete in his national open, Open de Espana, but is unsure if the DP World Tour will allow him to play.
"I've said many times, I don't go to the Spanish Open for the glory or anything else. I think it's my duty to Spanish golf to be there, and I also want to play in Sotogrande, Rahm said (via Golf Monthly).
"At that point, it would almost be doing not only me but Spanish golf a disservice by not letting me play, so yeah, that's why we're trying to talk to them and make that happen," the LIV Golfer said.
Along with Open de Espana, he is looking to compete in the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship at St. Andrews and Andalucia Masters. However, the Spanish golfer is not keen to pay fines as the DP World Tour has sanctioned golfers who compete in LIV Golf.
A DP World Tour spokesperson said that Rahm has outstanding sanctions, and until those are resolved, he is ineligible to compete in any of the DP World Tour events.
"I'm not a big fan of the fines. I think I've been outspoken about that. I don't intend to pay the fines, and we keep trying to have a discussion with them about how we can make this happen," Rahm said.
To remain eligible for the Ryder Cup, European golfers need to be members of the DP World Tour and to maintain the membership, golfers need to play in at least six events in a season. However, the number is reduced to four if one of the events is in their home country.
The Olympics was one of the four events for Jon Rahm, so he is looking to retain his DP World Tour membership by competing in the Open de Espana, Alfred Dunhill Links, and the Andalucia Masters.
All these three events offer Ryder Cup points, so Rahm has a chance of qualifying for the Ryder Cup directly. Even if he doesn't qualify directly, the Spaniard will surely be one of the captain's picks of Team Europe skipper Luke Donald.
When will Jon Rahm compete next?
Jon Rahm is all set to compete this week from September 13th at the 2024 LIV Golf Chicago event in Bolingbrook Golf Club. This is the final event on the 2024 LIV Golf calendar, which will decide the season-long individual championship winner.
Joaquin Niemann and Jon Rahm are the only two golfers in contention to win the season-long championship, as no other golfer can catch up to these two even if they win the event.
Hence, the 29-year-old golfer will be looking to conclude his season on a high and get into the team championship next week in Dallas with an individual championship.
