The 2024 Wyndham Championship might have just gotten over, but amateur golfer Luke Clanton is already on his way to tee it up at the US Amateur Golf Championship. He finished fifth at the Wyndham Championship, his third top-10 finish on the PGA Tour this year.
Clanton has been turning heads this year after making his debut on the PGA Tour. He finished 10th at the Rocket Mortgage Classic, second at the John Deere Classic and now fifth at the Wyndham Championship. However, there is no rest for the 20-year-old, as he will now go on to tee off at the US Amateur.
The Wyndham Championship just got over on Sunday evening. Clanton will immediately fly out to Minnesota to start his US Amateur campaign on Monday. Discussing his schedule, Clanton said (via Golf Digest):
"When you put it that way, it's going to be pretty brutal, no doubt. But again, I signed up to do this. It's cool to be busy."
While Luke Clanton is used to playing long rounds of golf, the 36-hole finisher at the Wyndham Championship was certainly something he had never experienced before.
"The crowds and all that, it's exhausting. I'm exhausted, 39 holes of golf is no joke. Just the body, the body's getting exhausted. I could feel it. I should have stayed in it a little bit longer, I kind of let myself get out of the zone and made a couple of bogeys coming down the stretch," he added.
The US Amateur will be held at Hazeltine National Golf Club, beginning August 12.
Luke Clanton's first priority remains US Amateur despite bustling PGA Tour season
Luke Clanton is clear about his priority for the season despite playing frequently on the PGA Tour. Emphasizing his preference for the US Amateur, he said (via Golf Digest):
"Number one. It's still number one. The U.S. Am's the biggest amateur event in the world. These pro events are no joke for sure, but as an amateur you want to win the U.S. Am."
The 2024 US Amateur will first see 312 golfers tee it up at Hazeltine and Chaska Town Course for a 36-hole stroke play, as per the format. They will then move on to the 64-hole match play event at Hazeltine on Wednesday, making for a gruelling week for the young golfers.
The likes of Miles Russell and Calum Scott will join Clanton this week. The winner of the US Amateur will receive an exemption into next year's US Open and The Open Championship as well as a possible invitation to the Masters. Nick Dunlap is the defending champion of the US Amateur.
